Mayo Group and Gordon's Woods Award Three Scholarships for Green Construction

  • School: Urban Science Academy
  • Award: Gordon's Woods Green Builder scholarship

Gordon's Woods, an ENERGY STAR-certified condominium complex located at 990 VFW Parkway, has awarded three seniors from the Urban Science Academy with the Gordon's Woods Green Builder scholarship. Brandi Phillips-Foye, Mayra Class, and Yohanny Medina-Herrera were each awarded $500 to pursue an education in sustainable and renewable resources.

"The original intention was only to award the scholarship to one applicant," notes John McGrail, founder and CEO of Mayo Group. "However, after we read the applicants essays and responses, we thought they were all so deserving of the money that we decided to award three."

"I am so thankful for the scholarship," says Brandi Phillips-Foye. I've worked very hard and every little bit helps me get closer to my future dreams." All three of the students plan to use the scholarship money to help pay for the expenses that come with higher education, including books and laptops.

For Yohanny Medina-Herrera, green construction is an essential component of a sustainable future. Yohanny states, "I am interested in green construction because I understand how important it is to have a society where green construction is established.  By doing so we will be able to know that we are working towards a green, good, safe and healthy environment for our children and future generations." Mayra Class adds, "[Green construction] is the best way to help us all give back to our community by being less wasteful and more resourceful."

"We are so fortunate to be able to offer three scholarships to these Urban Science Academy students," notes Kerri Bonarrigo, Director of Sales for Abode Residential Marketing and Sales. "Mayo Group and Gordon's Woods are very passionate about green construction and we are thrilled to see members of the younger generation show an interest in sustainable building as well."

The scholarships will be presented to the three students at the class of 2012's Senior Banquet on May 31 from 6 to 8pm.
