The Gardens at Gethsemane will be holding a Memorial Day service on Monday, May 28, at the Garden of Honor Veterans Corner at 670 Baker St., West Roxbury.

The West Roxbury VFW POST 2902 will be conducting a Memorial Day ceremony at the Memorial Cannon from the USS Constitution. The ceremony will start at 9:30 a.m.

State Sen. Mike Rush, D-Norfolk/Suffolk will be the keynote speaker.

The guest speaker will be Maureen Dunn, a nationally-acclaimed advocate for POW-MIA awareness through the eyes of a wife, and the co-author of "Search for Canasta 404."

The Laying of the Wreath will be done by the family of Lance Corporal Paul Reid, USMC, the first West Roxbury resident to give his life for our country in Vietnam. Gail and Carl Sprague, sister- and brother-in-law of Reid, will place the Memorial Wreath in the Garden of Honor. This year marks the 43rd year when family and friends of the first member of the military from West Roxbury died in Vietnam honor his sacrifice. Richard Gormley of Gormley Funeral Home who was a childhood friend of Lance Corporal Reid and fellow Marine started the tradition with Paul’s family.

Dunkin’ Donuts coffee and pastries will be provided by The Gardens. For further information please call 617-325-0186.

This is such a great way to begin your Memorial Day. Hard to believe it has been going on at the Gardens at Gethsemane in West Roxbury for 44 years.
