Five Things You Need to Know Today" is a Patch column that provides readers with essential, daily information at a glance. Check back later for more, and let us know what you think of the five things in the comments section.

  1. Did you know that there are more than 50 freshwater inland beaches in the Massachusetts state park system? Some you may have heard of before, some you may have not... It would be cool if someone visited all of them this summer.
  2. The City of Boston has issued a heat advisory, as well as 10 Ways to Stay Cool with one of them being the Jim Roche Community Ice Arena. Call before heading over for schedules.
  3. On Friday the West Roxbury YMCA's is holding a Summer Splash Friday. These events are free to members and $5 for non-members. 6:30-7:30 p.m.
  4. The Ohrenberger and Roche Family community centers, as well as the Draper Pool will be open until 9 p.m. tonight due to the City's heat advisory.
  5. On Friday, West Roxbury District Councilor Matt O'Malley will be holding office hours at Starbucks. 9 a.m. Come and talk to him.
