AgeWell West Roxbury and WalkBoston Want to Recognize Neighbors Who Have Helped During Snowstorms
Good neighbors will be honored on Facebook.
Are you a good neighbor? AgeWell West Roxbury and WalkBoston would like
to recognize those West Roxbury residents who have taken the time during
this snowy winter to help shovel out an elderly or disabled neighbor.
Send us your name and the name of the person you helped and we will
recognize you on our Facebook page and through our community network.
Email jwilliams@ethocare.org and get the recognition you deserve.
AgeWell West Roxbury and WalkBoston are working together on a public
awareness initiative to protect the safety of seniors and the disabled
this winter.
Snow clearance is a major concern for seniors and the disabled who cannot shovel for themselves and/or cannot navigate sidewalks and streets. Icy, unshoveled sidewalks isolate already frail seniors who cannot get out to socialize or even do the most basic of tasks such as going to doctor’s visits, picking up prescriptions and grocery shopping.
Seniors also have an intense fear of falling and statistics show that this fear is with good reason. One out of three adults age 65 and older falls each year. Among those age 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of injury death. They are also the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma. Navigating winter simply adds to the fear.
We thank you.
