Brown-Warren: Do You Believe There's a War on Women?
Trailing in the latest polls, Elizabeth Warren charged Scott Brown is part of a Republican war on women. Do you agree, or is this just a stunt?
Senator Scott Brown has opened up a lead over challenger Elizabeth Warren in a new poll released Tuesday. Public Policy Polling has Brown over Warren by five points.
On the stump, however, Warren's on the offensive, saying Brown and the Republican party are waging a war on women. She's pointed to comments by Missouri Senate hopeful Todd Akin as the latest evidence of that war. Akin has been roundly condemned by liberals and conservatives alike for his statement that it's rare for women to become pregnant after a "legitimate rape." Akin has apologized and attempted to clarify his statement, saying he meant "forcible rape."
Brown has publicly called on Akin to drop out of the race, and asked that the Republican party soften its stance on abortion.
What do you think? Is Warren right about Republicans trying to claw back women's rights? Did Brown call for Akin's withdrawal to blunt these attacks? Or are Warren's claims about a war on women just the smoke and mirrors of a losing campaign? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

I think this is gonna be a tough sell — Brown seems to be doing a pretty good job of insulating himself from the rest of the GOP on this topic. Plus, Brown is himself a victim of sexual assault, so he has credibility.

As much as I want to dislike Scott Brown, I have to admit for a member of the GOP he is pretty sane. (or maybe he only looks sane compared to Akin's comments and the new platform the GOP came up with)
That said , I won't vote for him because of a sketchy lgbt issues record. Call me a one issue voter, I don't mind.

Brown is being very coy when it comes to pretending to play the middle. If he is so bi-partisan why doesn't he switch to Independent? His voting record had a swing from right to center only at the end of last year when he told the Koch Brothers that he had started campaigning. His ads say nothing about his views on issues. They are all about what a great guy he is. I doubt very much he would turn down the GOP should his swing vote be needed.

Before you think Brown is a moderate, Know that he voted in favor of the raw which would have mandated trans vaginal probe before an abortion. This from a guy who hates big government except when it concerns women's bodies.

Scott's ads are all sizzle and no steak. He has "reached across the aisle" once or twice but is solidly right wing in values. He does not support equal marrriage rights; he cowrote and sponsored the Blunt Amendment to cut off women's access to reproductive healthcare; he refused to participate in the "It gets better campaign" to reach out to suicidal kids struggling with gender identity and bullying; he recieves money from and votes in the interest of big oil v. alternative energy; he favors tax breaks for the wealthiest 1%.
He is, in short, no friend to Working Class and Middle Class families, Women, Seniors, the Poor, or the LGBT community.

Mary I agree with you and had just had that thought too, but Scott Brown needs to be liked and approved of by some authority. I think it is a feature of his personality type. No Dad, needs some entity to embrace and be liked by. He doesn't have balls enough to be and independent. I'd respect him if he did actually. He's not a bad guy, he just chose to affiliate with a bad party, the party that chooses double speak and a variety of evil tactics to hoodwink the public into there partyline. Remember the Republicans are largely the 1% or supported by the 1% who are fearful of real people power, terrified of a real democratic process where each and every vote really counts. People are by and large lazy and ignorant, in the US hopelessly geographically bound and uninformed, how can they help but be with the poor kind of media and news outlets we have which pander and dumbdown everything. People don't read, they don't experience much outside their limited view or locality. AmeriKans are part of the problem because so many have been forced to drink the coolaide---buy, buy, buy, be made to feel inferior if you can't buy, buy, buy. AmeriKa the land of needless buying and selling. The Republicans need this system in place so the public can be in this form of shackles so they can remain on the top, in control and reaping all the profits. War is profitable, unhealthy people are profitable, uneducated people are profitable. Brown aligns with this because he aspires to be at the top.

I agree with Toonie. I have seen the Brown volunteers every Wednesday morning holding signs in the hot August heat. I know some of these people they are my neighbors. His grassroots volunteers are black, yellow, white, Catholic, Christian, Jewish, Pro-Choice, Pro-Life, Democrats, Independents, and Republics. Warren is way off message. Professsor Warren's voice is increasingly unhinged. Professor Warren's message is off kilter and unfocussed. Who can seriously believe that a special assistant to the President's Department of the Treasury is a Washington outsider. As her resume comes under closer inspection it becomes clear that she would never have survived a Senate hearing to become the Chairperson of the new financial accountability bureau. As a former Democrat watching the Professors campaign continuously stumble, I join other West Roxbury Democrats and Independents wondering why Deval Patrick and the national Demoratic Senatorial Campaign Committee were allowed to Big Foot the democratic process and stomp out the grassroots voice of Democratic Senate Candidate Marissa DeFranco. For that crass act of imperialism Professor Warren will never get my vote.

Republican committee members spent Tuesday articulating and affirming the principles they stand for in a draft of the official party platform. Here are some highlights:
NO ABORTION IN CASES OF RAPE OR INCEST. The proposal for a “human life amendment” passed without a hitch — and without any exceptions for rape or incest. The committee didn’t stop there; they also adopted language that would ban drugs that end pregnancy after conception, which could potentially include Plan B, the “morning after pill.”
SALUTE TO MANDATORY ULTRASOUNDS. The GOP officially praises states’ “informed consent” laws that force women to undergo unnecessary procedures, require waiting periods and endure other measures meant to discourage them from getting an abortion. One such law receiving a “salute” was crafted by committee head McDonnell, who passed a notorious mandatory ultrasound requirement after he signed an unsuccessful bill to require an even more invasive transvaginal probe ultrasound during an abortion consultation.
NO WOMEN IN COMBAT. The platform condemns “social experimentation” in the military, which covers everything from the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to allowing officers to wear their uniforms in gay pride events to letting women serve on the front lines.

Scott Brown is a tough guy to pigeon hole, he certainly does have bi-partisan votes in his record. RE: 'war on women' I do not think it is fair to put Brown in the category of a ground troop in that war, ( he IS pro-choice) but since he has voted 'party' on several defining issues, I'd say his record puts him in 'battles' with women, not the full scale 'war' that the party extremists are waging. In my opinion if 'war' = a '10', then Brown is 'only' in a battle with women ... scoring a 6 or 7 ish. Same for gay issues. not 50/50 bi-partisan as he likes to promote, again he has profound shortcomings with respect to gay issues. It is appalling that he rejects the Trevor Project's 'it gets better' campaign. but to be fair, he did support gays in the military. In short, I am undecided. Also to be fair, Warren, who claims 'middle class' status, is very wealthy. I found it hypocritical that while she is in favor of higher taxes, she did NOT choose to pay the optional higher tax rate here in Massachusetts. When confronted, she had a 'squidy' answer. Also to be fair, I AM excited that she wants to add shark teeth to Wall Street regulations - and sorely disappointed that Brown is in Wall Street's back pocket. One more pro-Brown point and further reason to consider him, he 'button holed' Obama to support ethics reform in Washington!!! Scott Brown was instrumental in making it illegal for congress people to trade on their inside info - THAT, to me, is a HUGE accomplishment.

"On the one hand, the Republican establishment wants to battle the perception that the party is waging a war on women — which it is — by claiming that women’s economic interests are separate and distinct from their health interests. But that’s a false argument for many women because the two, particularly when it comes to reproductive control, are inextricably intertwined. Children dramatically affect one’s financial bottom line. Self-sufficiency is tied up in self-determination. Family planning is essential to career planning. This is particularly true for single women. On the other hand, there are those on the fringe of the party who are less beholden to the establishment and constrained by convention. They air the party’s frustration with these single women voters and don’t try to disguise their disdain.
Earlier this month, Ann Coulter commented on the influence of Sandra Fluke in a Fox News interview: "I think it’s probably a good sign that Obama is so desperate just to get the base Democratic voter — stupid, single women — to vote for him."
Jesse Lee Peterson of Fox News, founded a Tea Party group in CA gave a speech: "The are some, a few out there that are logical women and can make sound decisions, but most cannot. I think that one of the greatest mistakes that America made was to allow women the opportunity to vote. We should’ve never turned it over to women."

being a victim of alleged sexual assault as a child doesn't give Scott Brown insight into what women who are raped and get pregnant are going through... Especially when you consider his long record of support for restricting abortions in ALL cases, so long as the nurse, doctor, janitor or whoever answers the door at the hospital is a proud catholic and refuses to treat the rape victim.
Scott Brown has a long record of support for restricting abortion and choosing his faith over a womans right to privacy: http://kittensandpoliticsab.wordpress.com/2012/08/22/scott-browns-compensating-for-something/

Why would anyone ever say that there's a GOP war on women? From the supposedly serious conservative publication National Review:
"The offspring of rich families are statistically biased in favor of sons — the children of the general population are 51 percent male and 49 percent female, but the children of the Forbes billionaire list are 60 percent male. Have a gander at that Romney family picture: five sons, zero daughters. Romney has 18 grandchildren, and they exceed a 2:1 ratio of grandsons to granddaughters (13:5). When they go to church at their summer-vacation home, the Romney clan makes up a third of the congregation. He is basically a tribal chieftain.
Professor Obama? Two daughters. May as well give the guy a cardigan. And fallopian tubes."

He actually does provide sources in previous posts - all right-wing propaganda trash rags. But whether or not they are even "facts", as he claims, is completely irrelevant. This entire line of attack is nonsense because we're talking about Scott Brown. But if he wishes to throw all Democrats into the mix to compare, then he should've actually been comparative. Items 1, 2, and 5 in his list do not affect women preferentially. These "facts" are caused by economic forces resulting from the actions (or inaction) of both parties. This also goes for items 3, 4, and 6. To say that Democrats are worse for women than Republicans, you'd have to compare the salaries to those of women under Republican staffers - which is obviously not done here.
This line of attack is complete nonsense, and is just a classic Republican tactic - go on the offensive about the very thing for which you are attacked by conjuring up nonsensical "facts". It's typically used when they don't have a leg to stand on and don't want people talking about their candidate's voting record. Then start firing away at the "character" of the other candidate... yawn.

I don't believe there is a war on women; however, I do think the GOP has gotten so Conservative that it will hurt women and minorities in every category. The Voucher system for Seniors is terrible and will cost Seniors a lot of money if they don't want to go to BMC for their care. Brown would definitly vote with the GOP were his Vote crucial to passing. I don't trust him. He is not as Independent as he is trying to portray himself. Just look at his voting record and how he almost voted against some issues important to us.

My favorite Warren ad was the one on TV when she compares the amount of GDP spent on infrastructure in the USA to that in China. What are you trying to say? We should be more like China? Give me a break.

Y yo me pregunto.

There is one candidate in this election is going to protect that dream, a leader to fight hard to keep the promise of America for the next generation.
And that is why we must stand up and make Mitt Romney the next president of the United States.
Thank you!
