Cheriton Heights Senior Housing Opens in West Roxbury

The $20.9 million development brings more affordable senior housing to West Roxbury.

 

Cheriton Heights, a brand new affordable senior housing community in West Roxbury held its grand opening last week.

Co-developed by The Community Builders, Inc. (TCB) and the American Arabic Benevolent Association (AABA), the development on Cheriton Road, also had support from state and local partners. The $20.9 million development brings more affordable senior housing to West Roxbury, which is needed.

The 70-unit Cheriton Heights development has one and two-bedroom apartments, for people 62 and older. There are units targeted for low- and moderate-income seniors, as well as market rate apartments, according to a press release. For restricted units, eligible residents will pay rent equal to 30 percent of their adjusted gross income.

“I’m happy to say that next month more than 70 deserving seniors will call Cheriton Heights home,” said Noah Sawyer, project manager for TCB, via press release. “This development helps ensure older residents of the city have safe, quality housing they can afford.”

The Cheriton Heights development is adjacent to the Cheriton Grove housing development, also a project collaboration between TCB and AABA, which owns both developments.

“This has been a long and wonderful 17 year process to bring this building to reality,” said David Hajjar, chair of the AABA real estate committee. “We’re grateful to all of our friends and partners for their help in building Cheriton Heights." 

Cheriton Heights' highlights include energey efficient appliances, a library, community room, onsite resident service coordinator, computers with internet access, and a community garden.

The James M. Salah Family Foundation provided a $500,000 grant that secured the remaining financing for the transaction. These funds when directly to provide community and recreation space for residents and the West Roxbury community.
