Furry Friends 'Working' in West Roxbury Businesses

Shop animals draw customers in and add their own style to businesses.

Editor's note: Indie the dog of Wicked Sharp, and Rocko the dog of Busted Knuckle Bicycle Shop have been added to the photo gallery since initial publishing of this article.

Don't be surprised to see a very-friendly white cat named Asimov come running at you after entering Seek Books

"He loves the customers, and as soon as the bell rings he's right there. Meow, meow - you're here to see me right?" joked Brad Kinne, the owner of the science fiction book store on Centre Street.

Asimov, has heterochromia of his eyes - two different iris colors, which fits with a science fiction book store. Kinne said Asimov also came with the name because a feline rescue worker had a penchant for the famous Asimov. He also has is own Facebook page.

Asimov the cat also enjoys sleeping under the book shelves that hold Isaac Asimov books. "I don't know if he knows the alphabet, but he hangs out in the A's. He changes his place. He lays on the comic books a lot."

Down on Spring Street, another furry friend helps Fabutique's Marika Gaurenszky. Her cock-a-poo, Norma Jean, can often be found in her comfortable bed when not greeting customers.

"She loves (the store) and always has her bling collar and pink little harness," said Gaurenszky. "She likes when people say hi to her."

Norma Jean got her namesake after Gaurenszky's late dog, Norman, plus the Marilyn Monroe reference. Like Monroe, Norma Jean loves to be the center of attention, and enjoys accessorizing.

"She likes the bling," said Gaurenszky. "She keeps me company. She likes to visit neighboring stores."

Besides keeping company the store pets also have their own fans, but the owners are unsure whether their furry assistants bring in more sales.

Said Gaurenszky, "I know kids come in to see her."

"Having a cat brings people in. Do they necessarily buy? I'd say he has a lot of fans. They come here just for him, not to shop, and that's okay," smiled Kinne.

And don't forget... Indie at Wicked Sharp and Rocco at Busted Knuckle! Maybe there should be an Animal Workers Union on Centre Street!

Sorry about that, Aaron! I added both Indie and Rocco with photos, too. An Animal Workers Union sounds good - more walks, no leather leashes, more table scraps!

How about bringing a bag of treats to distribute during the Sidewalk Sale Days -- if we still have them? If not, treats will be welcome at any time.
