Get reading now for more than a month of events for West Roxbury Reads starting on April 1.
Sponsored by the Friends of the West Roxbury Library, this year's book is Justin Martin's "Genius of Place: The Life of Frederick Law Olmsted, Abolitionist, Conservationist, and Designer of Central Park," which will be discussed by the author in person on April 25.
Did you know that Olmsted designed the Emerald Necklace, as well as New York City's Central Park? Learn about Olmsted's influence on American with events like the April 1 & 13 (reshowing) of "Olmsted and America’s Urban Parks” with comments by Olmsted experts and a live introduction by Jeanine Knox of the Emerald Necklace Conservancy.
Tours include April 27th's free visit of the newly-renovated Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site by the rangers at “Fairsted,” the former Olmsted home at 99 Warren St., in Brookline; and May 5th's free tour with actor Gerry Wright and Emerald Necklace Conservancy docent Stan Everett for “Walk with Mr. Olmsted Through the Back Bay Fens” leaving from the ENC Shattuck Visitor Center, 125 The Fenway, Boston. There's also a Lego event for kids on April 16 to make a West Roxbury park out of legos.
And don't forget May 2's awards ceremony for the 24th Annual Poetry Contest for All Ages with a theme of Hidden Nature.
