Boston could break record highs on Tuesday as the mercury is expected to hit 99.

Mayor Thomas Menino has declared a heat advisory. He activated the city's alert system, which sent out texts, emails and phone calls with a warning to stay safe. The following tips are from the city's heat information page.

Do:

• Drink lots of water and stay hydrated 
• Check on elderly persons
• Rest often in shady areas

Don't:

• Underestimate the seriousness of heat-related emergencies
• Drink alcoholic or caffeinated beverages
• Overexert yourself or work outside without taking breaks

Be sure to take breaks in the shade while outside, wear loose, light-colored clothing and sunscreen, and try to stay inside where it's air-conditioned. Remember that children, the elderly and homeless people are particularly susceptible. Heat-related illness such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke can be fatal if untreated and need to be taken seriously.

You can call 617-635-4500 to find the cooling center closest to you, or take a dip in the nearest state pool. And it's a good time to be a tourist in your town by going on a Swan Boat ride in the Public Garden, splashing around in the Christian Science Center fountain, or taking a ferry out to the Boston Harbor Islands.
