Do You Want 'Roadrunner' or 'Dream On' for State Rock Song?
Or do you have something else in mind?
A little more than a week after a bill was filed to make "Roadrunner" by The Modern Lovers the state's official rock song, two legislators responded by filing their own bill to make Aerosmith's "Dream On" the anthem.
"("Dream On" is a) classic ballad that's all about holding on to your dreams and seizing opportunity," Rep. Josh Cutler (D-Duxbury) said. Cutler is co-sponsoring the bill with Rep. James Cantwell (D-Marshfield).
The two songs represent very different stories, both about rock and roll, and about Massachusetts. One is a buoyant tribute to the thrill of being young in Massachusetts, speeding down Route 128. The other is a wistful look back by a Boston band that was just at its beginnings as one of the most famous in rock history.
When asked, Gov. Deval Patrick told reporters Monday that he hasn't considered which song, if any, he prefers for the state rock song.
What do you think? Should "Roadrunner" become the state rock song, should "Dream On," or should neither?

While I think that this topic is better suited for local radio stations to decide, I prefer "Roadrunner."

"two legislators responded by filing their own bill to make..."
Will someone please educate me how much time goes into formulating a bill to present to the floor? Why are our elected officials worrying about such petty matters? I swear our legislators have no clue how to use tax payer dollars wisely.
That's right!! If they don't spend their entire budget this fiscal year, they won't be allotted the same amount of $$ next! Godforbid they actually SAVE some money.

Dear Neighbors:
How could this even be a close question? No doubt, Aerosmith is a legendary Boston band and "Dream On" is a song that has justly lasted a long time.
But in "Roadrunner," Jonathan Richman has given us an unparalleled expression and celebration of freedom and loneliness, set in that combination of the strange and the familiar when you are young, driving alone in the dark on the highway through modern Massachusetts, when it is late at night, with the radio on.
Depending on which version Jonathan takes you on, you might wind up driving past the TV towers in Needham, or along Boston Harbor, or Rockport, or you could even even wind up out in Amherst "where the college rises up in the middle of nowhere." See http://www.jojochords.com/songs/r/roadrunner.html for the some of the many different improvised lyrics and destinations.
And not only is "Roadrunner" easier to sing along with when it comes on the AM radio, but it would take a heart of the coldest stone to resist joining in when Jonathan says: "O.K., now you sing it"!
And you just might think to yourself: "I, too, am in love with the modern world, in Massachusetts when it's late at night."
Where, indeed, would the youth of Massachusetts be without this sweet anthem of existential joy? I applaud Rep. Walsh's clear thinking and solid leadership on this issue, and I firmly endorse the selection of "Roadrunner" as the official rock song of our commonwealth.

Massachusetts by the BeeGees would seem to make sense, but probably Tax Man by the Beatles would seem more logical.

Taxman by the Beatles is clearly the best choice.

How lucky are we all to be living is such a vibrant state as MA------those who complain of taxes ought to try out the real costly places to live-----NY, NY, CT----
Some of the cheaper places are places not too appealing so for all who think they are so highly taxed------------------good-bye and close the door on the way out of a wonderful place to live--------------------

We're setting sail to a place on the map
From which no-one has ever returned
Drawn by the promise of the joker and the fool
By the light of the crosses that burned
Drawn by the promise of the wormen and lace
And the gold and the cotton and pearls
It's the place where they keep all the darkness you need
You sail away from the light of the world on this trip, baby
You will pay tomorrow
You're gonna pay tomorrow
You will pay tomorrow
Oh, save me, save me from tomorrow
I don't want to sail with this Ship of Fools, no, no
Oh, save me, save me from tomorrow
I don't want to sail with this Ship of Fools, no
I want to run and hide
Right now
Avarice and greed are gonna drive you over the endless sea
They will leave you drifting in the shallows
Drowning in the oceans of history
Traveling the world, you're in search of no good
But I'm sure you'll build your Sodom like you knew you would
Using all the good people for your galley slaves
As your little boat struggles through the warning waves
But you don't pay
You will pay tomorrow
You're gonna pay tomorrow
You're gonna pay tomorrow
Oh, save me, save me from tomorrow
I don't want to sail with this Ship of Fools
Oh, save me, save me from tomorrow
I don't want to sail with no Ship of Fools,no,no,no
Where's it coming from
Oh, where's it going to
It's just a, it's just a Ship of Fools, ahhhh
