It’s hard to miss the neatly stacked cereal, pasta, canned goods and other non-perishable foods piled in the front office of the St. Theresa School. Twice weekly those items are loaded into a car and delivered to a food pantry in Dorchester run by Catholic Charities of Greater Boston.

According to Catholic Charities Director of Community Services Beth Chambers, the bulk of the pantry’s food comes from the Greater Boston Food Bank, but it often isn’t enough to meet the growing need.  Chambers said that the donations from St. Theresa’s children and their families helps bridge the gap when supplies run low.

“It makes the difference between us having nothing and having enough to feed people each day,” said Chambers, adding, “It’s totally coming from the heart.”

Chambers said the food pantry feeds between 500 and 600 families each week.  She noted that they are being visited by an increasing number of working people who are struggling to pay bills and buy groceries. Donations typically rise during the holiday season, but drop off again after New Year’s, she explained.  The struggling economy has meant a decline in donations and a smaller inventory on the shelves. Chambers said she is grateful that St. Theresa’s continues to donate on a regular basis.

The St. Theresa’s food drive is ongoing throughout the school year.  Each week donated items are delivered to the food pantry by longtime parishioner Al Joyal.  Chambers said this “wonderful routine” began a few years ago when the daughter of St. Theresa’s Principal Jane Gibbons began working at Catholic Charities.  The relationship has continued to grow and flourish.

“While strong academics are a priority at St. Theresa School, we work hard to teach our children the importance of charitable works,” said Principal Jane Gibbons.  “Helping to support the food pantry is a way for children make a direct impact on the lives of other people in their community.  I am proud of our students for their generosity and commitment.”
