West Roxbury Boy Scout Troop Cleans Historical and Hidden Cemetery

West Roxbury and Roslindale Boy Scout Troops helped cleanup neighboring Jamaica Plain's Tollgate Cemetery.

The James Michael Curley Division #1 Ancient Order of Hibernians in America conducted several days of cleaning up at Tollgate Cemetery in Jamaica Plain.

"It looks great, one more day and we should have all of the leaves and debris cleaned up and gone," said Kevin Durant, president of the James Michael Curley Division #1 Ancient Order of Hibernians in America. "On the first day we cleaned up here we were joined by the Confirmation Class who were doing their day of service in preparation for receiving Confirmation from Sacred Heart Parish in Roslindale."

On the second day Boy Scouts Troop 5 of West Roxbury's Saint Theresa's Parish, and Troop 7 of Roslindale's Sacred Heart Parish, got down to business.

"We bagged up 25 bags of leaves and other debris, the grass was mowed and the improvement is very noticeable," said Durant.

Durant said a third day of cleaning up is planned for June 2, which will be followed by some flower planting to make it look even better.

"We are also going to plan a rededication over Labor Day weekend, which coincides with one of the major battles the 28th took part in. The Second Battle of Bull Run, August 28-30, 1862. The 28th suffered 135 causalities," said Durant.
