West Roxbury is the Place to be on Veterans Day
Three Veterans Day events in the neighborhood, plus plenty of discounts for veterans. Thank the men and women who served, and who are currently serving our country.
West Roxbury is the place to be on Veterans Day, with several events planned for Friday.
The German Centre for Extended Care will dedicate their Wall of Honor. This is a pictorial and narrative exhibit of members of the Deutsches Altenheim community who served in the Armed Forces of the US. Refreshments will be served at 9:30 a.m. and the dedication is scheduled from 10:30 to 11 a.m.
A little bit down the road on Baker Street, you will have the opportunity to see American flags "retired."
When our flags become too damaged to respectfully continue to display, there is an established etiquette to follow to reverentially “retire” the flag.
Seeing this unmet need, the Gardens at Gethsemane is holding its First Annual American Flag Retirement Ceremony to help organize with the community to implement this important practice to respect our flag at 11:30 a.m.
Torn and tattered American flags can be dropped off at The Gardens at Gethsemane Office, Boston Police Stations E-5 (1708 Centre St., West Roxbury) and E-13 (3345 Washington St., Jamaica Plain), Boston Firehouses at 1940 Centre and 5115 Washington streets in West Roxbury, 746 Centre St., Jamaica Plain and 945 Canterbury St., Roslindale, the West Roxbury YMCA, through the Boys Scouts at St. Theresa of Avila, Holy Name and St. John Chrysostom, all in West Roxbury.
Also, rumor is there will be some pretty good barbeque being served - for free!
At 2:45 p.m., Rolling Thunder, MA Chapter 1 will convene at Millennium Park and ride their motorcycles down the VFW Parkway to Baker Street, reaching their destination - The Gardens at Gethsemane, to dedicate a bench and boulder with a black granite plaque inserted, calling attention to POW-MIA issues.
The dedication of the reflecting park will begin at 3 p.m., right next to the Garden of Honor Veterans area at the cemetery. Joe D'Entremont, president of MA Chapter 1 invites all motorcycle riders to join them.
