This is one of those strange holidays where what's open and closed might surprise you.

 

Did Christopher Columbus envision parking meters when he was on his way to the Americas? Probably not. But here's a list of what's open and closed on Columbus Day.

City Offices: Closed.

Libraries: Closed.

Boston Public Schools: Closed.

Trash and recycling Collection: Delayed one day.

Street Sweeping: None during the day Monday.

Parking: Meters not in effect. Other parking rules appy.

MBTA: Runs on a Saturday schedule.

Federal offices: Closed.

Mail: Post offices closed; express delivery only.

Banks: Closed.

Stock market: Closed.

Retail stores: Open.

Liquor stores: Open.

Supermarkets: Open.

Convenience stores: Open.

Taverns, bars: Open.
