Which Ice Cream Flavors Are Popular in West Roxbury This Summer?

Three classics are still the top flavors, says one iScream Works employee.

In the West Roxbury ice cream landscape, the classics are still king, according to one iScream Works employee.

"Vanilla, cookie dough, and chocolate chip," said West Roxbury resident Andrew Favorito, 18, who has worked at the shop since its May 2008 opening. "Every time I'm working, those are the ones that sell the most."

Favorito said those three flavors are most popular both with children and adults. Vanilla sells the most, he said, because it serves as the base for most frappes and sundaes.

Though some other less traditional flavors, like bear tracks and wild blueberry are "pretty popular," he said, "people tend to stick with the basics." Because the shop stays well stocked, though, Favorito said selling out of those three favorites is not something he or his customers have to worry about.

On this Saturday's hot afternoon, though, customers sought out different flavors. Patty Wagner, a Raynham resident who works in West Roxbury on weekends, left the shop with a cup of cake batter topped with sprinkles. She supported Favorito's notion that the basics are most popular, saying that she usually goes with traditional flavors.

"But I'm feeling a little wacky today," she said.

One West Roxbury father and son pair, Dan and Chance Cook, say they both prefer mint chip ice cream. While six-year-old Chance enjoyed a cup of the preferred flavor, Dan delved into a cup of maple walnut for the first time. "I got it because it's something different," he said.

As for chance, the reasons for his atteaction to mint chip were short and to the point.

"I like chocolate and I like mint," he said through a smile, lips covered in green.

The hot summer has created a busy season for iScream Works, Favorito said, with steady business during the day and very busy nights, especially after dinner, Favorito said.
