WRNC Votes in Support of Centre Street Mexican Take-Out

The West Roxbury Neighborhood Council last night voted in a quick meeting to support the opening of a Mexican restaurant on Centre Street - and set the tone for what promises to be a far more contentious meeting next month when Speedy's Market seeks a beer and wine license.
Anthony Ustayev, the owner of Christo's Pizza for the last 15 years, and his son Daniel, described their proposed take-out Mexican shop, Los Amigos, to strong support from the Council. The shop would offer tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and salads, with hours from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. It would be at 1743 Centre St., a couple steps away from Christo's at 1761 Centre. The new restaurant would be run by the younger Ustayev, who will graduate with a degree in entrepeneurship from Babson College this spring. The location has already been largely converted for food services and construction should be complete shortly after the New Year.
The WRNC's unanimous support was for a CV and take-out license from the City.
Prior to adjourning, the Council also looked ahead to next month's meeting, which will see Speedy's Market's owner seek support in acquiring a beer and wine license. Council members commented negatively about the shop's appearance and signage, which advertises its tobacco products and gambling options, indicating that they would not support the bid. Earlier this month, the West Roxbury Civic & Improvement Association voted to oppose the request, 26-2, citing similar concerns.
This past spring, when the WRNC voted in favor to support the Greek International Market's bid for a beer and wine license, opposition voices were concerned that a vote in favor would set a precedent for convenience shops like Speedy's Market.
"I was against the Greek Market's [request] for this reason...How do you say no to markets when they come asking?" said WRNC member Rob Corley.
The meeting was held at the District E-5 Police Station. Next month's meeting is scheduled for January 24.
