Letter: Bring Back Macy's Mural

The mural on Macy's will be lost, and at least one resident would like it to be brought back.

To the Editor: I'm getting in touch about something that I feel needs to be brought to the West Roxbury community's attention. You are probably familiar with the mural on the side of Macy's on Centre Street. It's a farm/field scene with wonderful color and it brings such a bright, positive appearance on a drab brick wall-a beautiful scene on an otherwise busy street. I spoke with an employee there today, and he told me that they're having to repoint the brick and the mural will be lost. The guy at Macy's mentioned the existing mural was painted by a community arts group with an artist's guidance. It would be wonderful if something like that could be done again.  Elizabeth Gross West Roxbury resident

Free Music Lessons Program 'Making Music Matters' Needs Your Help

Making Music Matters! provides free instrumental music lessons to children in grades three through six, in six BPS schools, including the Beethoven and Ohrenberger

Dear Beethoven, Ohrenberger, Mozart, Bates, Mattahunt and Washington Irving schools families: Making Music Matters! needs your help. For the first time in the program's history, we are faced with the challenge of being underfunded for the coming school year.  Our funders have been more than generous for more than a decade, but some are no longer funding programs such as ours. We need to increase our fundraising efforts to close this gap. We are kicking off this initiative by participating in the Walk For Music this weekend. On Sunday, a team of MMM! staff members and students will be joining in this two-mile walk around the beautiful Back Bay Fens (WalkForMusic.org).  There are many ways to help:  For those not familiar with the program…

Haitian Artists 'When Our Brushes Shook' Exhibit at MSPP

The exhibit is from April 27-May 11 at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology as part of the graduate school’s focus on global mental health this spring.

Editor's note: The following is a press release. As time passes and some wounds heal, Haitian artists have begun to express more hope and optimism in their works of art, according to Charlot Lucien, funder and co-director of the Haitian Artists Assembly of Mass. (HAAM) and one of the founders of “When Our Brushes Shook,” an organization formed in the aftermath of the January 2010 earthquake to “revive” the work of the artists in the city of Jacmel, whose lives and work were devastated by the disaster. The emotional shift Lucien refers to can be seen in an exhibit from April 27 - May 11 at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology (MSPP) as part of the graduate school’s focus on global mental health this spring.
