West Roxbury athletes young and old are featured for their athletic endeavors. Contact Adam Vaccaro at adamtvaccaro@gmail.com for suggestions.
The Roxbury Latin School is known for giving its students a well-rounded education in and out of the classroom. On the athletic field, few are as well-rounded as West Roxbury native Finn Sullivan, who will enter his senior year later this month. Sullivan, who will serve as the captain of the football team this fall and has already served a season as the captain of the lacrosse team, has also played both hockey and basketball at the varsity level. The four-sport star spoke with Patch about his experiences on the field, attending RL as a West Roxbury native, and his expectations for the Red …
West Roxbury is often considered a hotbed for youth and high school sports. From Parkway Pop Warner to Parkway Lacrosse, and with the Catholic Memorial School offering Division 1 samplings all year long, the neighborhood has its share of every sport imaginable. One sport you may not think of right away, though, is crew. A strong rower, though, West Roxbury boasts. Boston Latin School junior-to-be Sara Kiritsy coxswains the Boston Latin School's lightweight team, earning in the process a trip to Nationals in Tennessee this past spring. Kiritsy, whose sister Caroline also rowed with BLS and now…
It was going to take some kind of a player to win the first-ever Charlie Hughes Memorial Award for Parkway Travel Basketball this past winter. Parkway Travel handed the award, named for the late founder and long-time coordinator of the program, to one boy and one girl in recognition of their on-court abilities and off-court character.  Amongst the girls, eighth-grader Caroline Travers (center/forward) stood out, taking home the inaugural award. Jerry McDermott, who currently administers Parkway Travel, said, "I think Caroline exemplifies the type of player and person Parkway Travel Basketball…
A Division 1 high school athlete may choose his or her school for any number of reasons. For BC High quarterback Bartley Regan, who will enter his senior season this year and also plays hockey and baseball for the Eagles, those reasons provided some conflict as he neared high school. A West Roxbury native, Regan grew up in the shadow of Catholic Memorial and even went to CM for seventh and eighth grade. One connection ran even deeper, however: Regan is the grandson of the late Jim Cotter, a 1955 BC High graduate who went on to coach the Varsity football program for 40 years (1964-2004), …
Sometimes for an athlete, doors open fortuitously that may not have otherwise been expected. Such is the case for swimmer Michelle Shen, who got into the sport to help her with her studies after moving to West Roxbury to attend the Boston Latin School. The result? Shen is one of the neighborhood's finest swimmers. Shen competed in the Bay State Games last summer as a 13-year-old and is bound for the games again later this month. Last year, she set a personal record with a 1:16 time in the 100-meter butterfly, and, having just completed her eighth-grade year, she's looking to finish even …
This past spring proved to be a great season for Parkway United Soccer's U-12 team, which competed Boston Area Youth Soccer's Division 2F. The team -- the same one that won the Mayor's Cup in October of 2009 as a U-11 squad -- outscored their competition 22-9 over the course of the season en route to winning the division. A key cog on the squad was a Temple Street resident, defenseman Ryan Guinto. Guinta spoke to West Roxbury Patch about his history with soccer, how he hopes to develop his game going forward, and about why he thinks the Parkway United program has seen such success. Ryan, your…
Boston Latin School softball catcher Mary DeMoura has seen the best of times in her two years behind the plate for the Wolfpack. Since making the varsity roster as a freshman, the West Roxbury resident has seen the Wolfpack win 18 games in back-to-back seasons. She's been the battery-mate of Roslindale-based pitcher Emily Berardi, who collected accolade after accolade on the mound for the team. This spring, DeMoura was behind the plate when BLS won their first round playoff game, a feat that had eluded the team for nearly a decade. DeMoura, who also plays soccer and basketball at BLS, spoke …
It has been an exciting month for 8-year-old West Roxbury softball player Katie Crowley. Crowley, who has spent the spring playing for the Parkway Girls Softball League's U-8 Starfish, stood out in Major League Baseball's Aquafina Pitch, Hit, and Run competition, which challenges young baseball and softball players nationwide to measure their skills in -- as its title suggests -- pitching, hitting, and running. After standing out in local and sectional competitions in April and May at Billings Field, Crowley competed at Fenway Park in the Regional competition for 7-to-8-year-old girls, and …
