New Computers, New Classes,
Community Benefits
Starting August 15, 2012, the BCYF Roslindale Community Center will commence a series of computer learning courses in its recently upgraded computer lab. The first course will be geared toward adult beginners and will cover the basics of computers and the Internet. The courses will be taught by Roslindale resident, George Vento.
“George is an adept teacher and has been with us for several years. This will expand our relationship with him and bring local talent back into the community,” said Dennis Kirkpatrick, a board member of the Roslindale Community School Council, Inc, which will be sponsoring the series in partnership with the BCYF Roslindale Community Center. “George’s background is in music and he has been utilized on and off in our after school programs for a couple of years in that capacity, so this will show his many other talents.” Vento has already conducted successful computer learning courses in community centers outside of Boston.
The adult learning course will start Wednesday, August 15 and run for a total of 10 classes over a period of 5 weeks, meeting on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Saturdays from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 PM. The initial course will be priced at $50 per person for the full course and will be limited to the first 18 persons on a first-come basis. New students can register in person by check at the BCYF Roslindale Community Center, 6 Cummins Highway, in Roslindale Square.
The BCYF Roslindale Community Center is now also a public access internet site as a part of the City of Boston’s ‘Public Computing Centers’ project, itself facilitated by a grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. As a part of this upgrade, the center’s computer lab was upgraded to include 18 new, state-of-the-art Windows 7 desktop systems.
Public access to the new computer lab is also now available. The summer hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and on Saturday from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. A wireless Internet option is available on request.
The Roslindale Community School Council, Inc. is a non-profit corporation which partners with BCYF on the community center’s programming and acts as the center’s fiscal oversight body. Membership in the Council is open to residents and employees of the Roslindale community. For more information see: http://www.roslindalecc.org or visit us on Twitter and Facebook.
