Battle of the Pumpkin Beers in West Roxbury on Thursday

5 things to know Thursday, Oct. 31 in West Roxbury.

1. West  on Center is celebrating Halloween Thursday  with a Battle of the Pumpkin Beers. They're stocked with Cisco's Pumple Drumkin (Martha's Vineyard), Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale (Portland), and Harpoon UFO Pumpkin (Boston), and are expecting a few more seasonal favorites. There is a $100 cash prize for the customer with the best costume, and staff is having a competition as well.

2. The Patrick Lyndon School is having a coin drive to benefit Mark Delamere and his family. Anyone with spare change can drop it off at the Lyndon School located at 20 Mount Vernon Street from Monday to Friday of this week, 9:30 a.m to 3 p.m. The students, parents and faculty of the Patrick Lyndon school wish Mark well as he continues in his recovery.  

3. A Harvest Brunch and Raffle to benefit Rosie’s Place will be held Sunday at the West Roxbury Pub & Restaurant from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Mayor Thomas Menino and Angela Menino will be the special guests.

4. EdVestors is pleased to announce that the George H. Conley Elementary School in Roslindale is the winner of this year’s $100,000 Thomas W. Payzant School on the Move Prize, with runners-up schools Orchard Gardens Pilot K-8 School of Roxbury and Urban Science Academy of West Roxbury each receiving $25,000 prizes. The awards were presented at a Faneuil Hall ceremony featuring Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino and recognizing his decades-long dedication to improving Boston public schools, along with Boston Public Schools Interim Superintendent John McDonough and former superintendents Carol R. Johnson, Michael Contompasis, and Thomas W. Payzant, for whom the award is named.
