Monday Essentials: Movie Night at Billings Field; Bandits Tryouts; and Book Club

Chessmaster Charlie leads the Ted D'Amato Chess Club at the West Roxbury Library on Monday and Wednesday.


  1. On Monday night at Billings Field there is a movie night with tonight's feature being 'We Are Marshall' with the Boston Children's Museum "The Big Cake Tour" hosting family activities beginning at 7 p.m. Movie begins at dusk (8 p.m.) Popcorn provided by AMC Loews Movie Theatre. Billings Field is at LaGrange and Centre streets.
  2. Chessmaster Charlie moderates the Ted D'Amato Chess Club on Monday and Wednesday afternoons in the summer at the West Roxbury Library. The program runs from 2:30-5:30 p.m. for students of the game of all ages and skill levels. This program is funded by the Friends of the West Roxbury Branch Library.
  3. The Boston Bandits girls traveling softball team is holding tryouts at the West Roxbury Education Complex from Aug. 19-23.
  4. On Wednesday the book club at the West Roxbury Library will discuss 'The Flight of Gemma Hardy' from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Stop by for free. Discuss the book, or learn about the book club and the next book. 1961 Centre St.
  5. On Tuesday the Boston Parks and Recreation Department presents a free ParkSCIENCE Boston Children's Festival on Tuesday (rain date Aug. 21) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Franklin Park in Dorchester. Children and families can participate in a variety of free activities such as potting plants, watching a robot in action, flying paper kites and rockets, and digging for artifacts! There will also be giveaways, games, dancing, and more.
