Local Boy Scouts Help Feed the Need This Thanksgiving

The Boy Scouts of America “Scouting for Food” campaign has provided nearly 500,000 pounds of food for those in need this holiday season.  More than 25,000 Massachusetts scouts participated in the annual food drive, delivering more than 450,000 non-perishable food items to stock food pantries in communities from the North Shore to Cape Cod.    The donated items were delivered in time to help many food pantries serve Thanksgiving meals.

“The Boy Scouts brought us a lot of food and had a tremendous impact on our ability to feed people and families at Thanksgiving,” said Rosemarie Braverman, Director of the Roslindale Food Pantry.  “We serve more than 200 Thanksgiving meals, and I would say about 50% of that food came from the Boy Scouts at Troop 7.  Without this help we could not have helped as many people as we were able to.”

Scouting for Food also had an impact on suburban communities that often struggle to meet the demand, especially among seniors and single women with children.  “A truly impressive effort,” said Cynthia Scott, Director of the Wellesley Food Pantry, which received food collected by Knox Trail Council scouts.  “The food pantry relies on this drive, our biggest of the year, to have enough food for the holidays, and we are so grateful for all the scouts coming together to make it happen.  What an impact kids can have!”

“Scouting for Food has a positive impact on the ability of local food banks to assist underprivileged families during the holiday season,” said Chuck Eaton, Chief Executive of the Boy Scouts Boston Minuteman Council.  “I am very proud of all our Scouts and volunteers who helped us reach our goal and help so many deserving people this season.”
