Roxbury Community College's rendition of A Soldier's Play nominated for Best Actor and Best Ensemble IRNE Awards

The Roxbury Repertory Theater’s production of A Soldier’s Play has recently been nominated for two IRNE Small Theater Awards in Best Ensemble (Small/Fringe) and Best Actor in A Play (Small/Fringe) for Daver Morrison’s performance as Captain Richard Davenport.

A Soldier’s Play is a Pulitzer Prize winning play originally written by Charles Fuller that takes place during the Second World War in the 1940’s racially segregated Louisiana. When an African American Sergeant in Fort Neal is found dead, foul play is suspected. Captain Taylor, the platoon’s white officer, enlists the aid of Captain Davenport, portrayed by Daver Morrison, an African American Officer in the United States Army, to solve the case. Davenport soon discovers the black Sergeant had ruffled the feathers of many of his black and white comrades, and is now determined to find the perpetrator, regardless of rank and race.

The Roxbury Repertory Theater’s production of A Soldier’s Play ran earlier this fall and gained the attention of the Wellfleet Harbor Theater, where they had a command performance for Black History Month. “The ensemble work of the company was outstanding in this production” exclaimed Marshall Hughes, Director of Visual, Performing and Media Arts for Roxbury Community College, “The Roxbury Repertory Theater serves as an ambassador of the college, promoting diversity and dialogue through the arts.”
