West Roxbury Student Excels at Holy Cross College Classics Day

Corey Scannell of West Roxbury, a senior at Boston College High School, together with classmate Michael Kelley of Revere, were awarded first prize out of 855 students from 28 schools for their work in the Manuscript Challenge at Holy Cross College Classics Day. They deciphered and translated a 10th century French manuscript of Horace's Odes 1.11 and 1.12. This is the second consecutive year that BC High has won first prize in the Manuscript Challenge.

Corey is one of the two winners nationally of a Rev. Henry Bean S.J. Classics four year full scholarship to the College of the Holy Cross.

Kelley also led the Upper Level Certamen team, composed of 5 juniors and sophomores, to a second place finish...a massive feat given the amount of teams present. Certamen is a “competition” on Latin grammar, Roman and Greek mythology, Roman history, and Roman life. The Lower Level Certamen team composed of 4 freshmen just missed the finals with an impressive performance.

Among the myriad of activities Holy Cross’ Classics department organizes, the most eagerly anticipated and rambunctious was the student-built chariot race. The BC High team entered a chariot in the race. While they didn't win...they were the crowd favorite throwing candy to the plebeians along the Via Sanctae Crucis.

The 42nd annual event continues to gain notoriety as the successful event gives regional high school students the opportunity to have fun, learn about Holy Cross’ Classics department and celebrate Roman culture.
