French Fry Returns From ACL Surgery

Last month, the Lawsons turned to the community to help raise money for surgery for their injured dog, French Fry. French Fry returned from surgery this week.

One month ago, French Fry could barely stand, today, he is recovering from surgery – thanks in part to the community of Jamaica Plain and beyond.

Jenn and Chris Lawson’s Springer-lab mix, French Fry, was in need of an expensive surgery after sustaining a knee injury last summer. Meghann Martin, a friend of the Lawsons, started a GoFundMe site asking for donations from the community, setting the goal at $3,500, the cost of the surgery.

Through the site, the family received $2,765 from 72 people in 16 days, which was enough for the surgery.

The South Huntington Avenue family is grateful their dog got the gift of movement this holiday season.

“We got donations from people all over the world who helped us to raise over $2,700! This was all really quite something!” Jenn Lawson wrote in an email to Jamaica Plain Patch.

Just like Voltaire wrote in Candide, Le plus que je connais l'homme, le plus que j'aime mon chien!

I understand where you are coming from. The majority of the people who felt compelled to donate were close friends and family. The story did get out to the community and through the website my friend set up to help me out and when she contacted the Patch they were interested in telling our story. I didn't ask for any of it; I love my family, I love my dog and am truly grateful for the support to get her well. I'm sorry this upset you. I don't think that the $20 here and there has hindered fundraising efforts for anyone who is in need. It can be hard to explain but it does make me sad that you think a part of my family is a waste of money. Regardless, I hope the New Year is a good one for you. Lord knows my family has been through some of the most difficult things you need to go through in life, so getting my dog better is bringing me some long over due peace and happiness. -Jen Lawson

The dog should have just signed up for mass health and it would have been free.

Awww... lighten up. Pets bring so much joy into people's lives and the donors were just recognizing that.
