Volunteers are needed to deliver groceries to elderly and needy West Roxbury and Roslindale residents this holiday season.
The West Roxbury Business and Professional Association annually leads grocery delivery drives with goods from Roche Bros, as part of the Family in Need program.
While Roche Bros is generous, approximately $5,000 is needed to be raised to pay for groceries for Thanksgiving and Christmas, said Mary Mulvey Jacobson, president of the WRBPA, "and to do something special for the family or families we 'adopt; to help out with other needs."
"We could never do this without the support of the businesses and residents of the community," added Jacobson.
If people want to help, they can make checks payable to Family in Need and mail to Post Office Box 320113, West Roxbury, MA 02132.
Jacobson said volunteers are needed to deliver groceries on Tues., Nov. 20 and Fri. Dec. 21 this year.
"Volunteers will meet at Roche Bros near the driveway abutting the MBTA Commuter Rail Station at 9:30 a.m. sharp both days," said Jacobson.
The Family in Need program is a WRBPA effort, in collaboration with the YMCA, Ethos/AgeWell West Roxbury and the Boston Police District E-5 Department. Each group identifies a list of families and seniors who need holiday groceries at Thanksgiving and Christmas. "We then work with Roche Bros, who shops and bags up the groceries and turkeys and a group of volunteers from the business, police and residential communities make the deliveries," said Jacobson.
