Winter Storm Watch in Effect Through Friday

Most areas can expect 6 to 12 inches of snow.

With the holidays now over, the new year's first winter storm that is expected to hit the area Thursday and Friday.

According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm watch is in effect for all of southern New England, including West Roxbury, from late Wednesday night through Friday morning.

Most of the affect area can expect anywhere from 6 to 12 inches of snow. Residents living along the eastern coastline of Massachusetts should prepare from 8 to 14 inches, with near blizzard conditions.

Snowfall is predicted to start after midnight on Wednesday. There may be a lull in the storm on Thursday, but pick up in intensity with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, resulting in whiteout conditions.

Northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, will result in dangerous wind chills.

A winter storm watch is issued when the potential for 6 or more inches of snow is predicted in a 12-hour period, , or 8 or more inches in a 24-hour period.
