Get the most recent updates on the project in the days and weeks to come.

Patrons of the West Roxbury YMCA may notice something missing from here on out as they visit the facility on Centre Street: The old West Roxbury Post Office.

The building was torn down Monday, June 23, as construction crews resume work on renovations to the facility. For a full video of crews working on site, click here

The $15 million project will involve the updating of the facility on Centre Street and the demolition of 16,000 square feet from the existing building, and the construction of a 24,000 square-foot addition, nearly doubling the size of the facility to about 40,000 square feet. West Roxbury YMCA officials, meanwhile, recently revealed the following updates regarding the status of the project:

  • Demolition is ongoing and began in the old fitness center on June 19, with crews working on electrical wiring, locker removal and taking down walls.
  • Crews this week plan to install a temporary wall in the YMCA gym, which will allow construction crews to begin cutting windows and begin work on sprinklers and HVAC systems.
  • The Post Office demolition is not expected to effect current parking arrangements.
  • The new playground will be demolished in the coming weeks to allow for building expansion.
