5 Things You Need to Know Today: September 6

  1. Sunday will represent the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Last week, Beacon Hill Patch published a. A public wreath laying will occur early in the Public Gardens, and there will be commemorative events at the State House all day. The City will also play host to two memorial concerts.   2. A reminder: the Labor Day holiday has pushed trash day in West Roxbury back one day.
  3. It's back-to-school week in Boston. West Roxbury Patch will have information for students and parents throughout the week, as well as back-to-school features this week and next. Grades 1-12 in Boston Public Schools (in West Roxbury, that's the , , , and Schools, as well as the ) and start classes Thursday. BPS kindergarteners begin school on Monday. The starts on Wednesday, while started last week.
  4. Speaking of back-to-school season, tomorrow the  will host a Kindergarten Days Celebration. Children who will be entering Kindergarten (K0, K1, & K2) for the first time in the Boston Public Schools are invited. Wear your yellow Countdown to Kindergarten T-shirt and join the fun. 10:30 a.m. - noon. Free.
  5. Have you heard of the 3/50 Project? The idea behind the project is to spread awareness of the positive effects of shopping at independent businesses, like many of the shops that line Centre Street. Reads a pamphlet for the project, "For every $100 spent in independently owned businesses, $68 returns to the local economy through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures.
