Walsh Defeats Connolly, Will be Next Mayor of Boston

State Representative Marty Walsh will be the next mayor of Boston. Both the Boston Globe and Associated press have called the race for Walsh, who bested City Councilor John Connolly in a hard-fought race between two similar candidates.

With 90 percent of precincts in, Walsh holds a 3,300 vote lead over Connolly, according to unofficial results posted by the city's Election Department. Turnout was surprisingly brisk, with more voters coming out to vote than was expected. Boston.com reported nearly 114,000 ballots were cast by 6 p.m.. 

"We came up short tonight but I am very proud of how we ran this campaign", said Connolly in his concession speech Tuesday night.

In the At-large council race, Michelle Wu, Ayanna Pressley, Michael Flaherty and Stephen Murphy are in position to win with 90 percent of the vote in.

East Boston has voted down a proposed casino at Suffolk Downs, though Revere voters supported the plan.
