Makerspace start-up meeting at West Roxbury Public Library, Saturday, Nov 9, 1-4 PM

A group of Boston residents are working on opening a makerspace and will be holding a meeting on Saturday, November 9th, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM at the West Roxbury Public Library, (1961 Centre Street) for its next group meeting.

What is a makerspace? Makerspaces are a community-operated workspace where people with common interests can rent spaces and create or be "makers" together. This includes people working in 3D printing, art, bicycle building and repair, CNC router, computer-aided design, electronics, electrical fabrication, embedded systems, fashion and textiles, jewelry, lampworking, laser cutting, machinery, metalworking, painting, photography, precision metal machining, publishing or printing, robotics, screen-printing, sculpture, software development, stained glass, sewing & fiber arts, video, welding, woodworking, etc. Makerspaces can also offer classes for adults, teens, and kids, co-working spaces, cafes/restaurants, and more.

The idea is to get out of your home or solo studio space, work among your neighbors and peers, share tools and resources, and get inspired by other creative people doing amazing things.

There are now makerspaces around the world ( http://makerspace.com/makerspace-directory ). Greater Boston already has some amazing ones, including Somerville's Artisan Asylum ( http://artisansasylum.com ) and  Allston's Ideas to Things (http://ideastothings.org ).

So far, however, there is no makerspace on this end of Boston, so a group of Bostonians based in Jamaica Plain, spearheaded by Dominic Burdick and Eileen McMahon, are launching a makerspace for residents of Brookline, Dorchester, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Roslindale, Roxbury, West Roxbury, and beyond.

We've created a 3-minute online survey to find out what categories makers are most interested in as they are currently looking at real estate properties where the project will get started.

The survey takes three minutes to complete. Please share this information with friends, families, and neighbors who you think might be interested.
