City, State and Nation Ready to Say Goodbye to Fallen Firefighters

Services are scheduled this week for Lt. Ed Walsh and FF Michael Kennedy.

Thousands of firefighters from throughout Massachusetts and across the nation will gather to say goodbye to two of their own this week who made the ultimate sacrifice.

They will come to honor Lt. Ed Walsh and Firefighter Michael Kennedy, who will both be laid to rest. The two Boston firefighters died battling a nine-alarm blaze in Back Bay Wednesday. Officials said the pair became trapped in the basement of a four-story brownstone.

Lt. Walsh was from Engine Company 33; Firefighter Kennedy was with Ladder Company 15.

Lt. Walsh’s wake and funeral are Tuesday and Wednesday in his hometown of Watertown. Firefighter Kennedy’s wake is Wednesday and his funeral Thursday; both are in West Roxbury.

The wake for Lt. Walsh will be held at St. Patrick’s Church, located at 212 Main St. in Watertown, from 3 to 8 p.m. His funeral will be held at the church Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

Firefighter Kennedy’s wake will be held Wednesday at the P.E. Murray Funeral Home, 2000 Centre St. in West Roxbury, from 2:30 to 8 p.m. General public viewing hours for Kennedy’s wake will be from 4 to 8 p.m. His funeral Mass is Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Name, 1689 Centre St., West Roxbury.

The investigation into the source of the fire is ongoing. Fire officials were looking into the possibility that the building’s heating system sparked the blaze. They are also reviewing the structure’s electrical system and determining if any smokers lived in the building.
