Breaking with Tradition, Blanchard's Puts Up Candidate's Signs

What do you think of a Boston mayoral candidate having signs in front of Blanchard's? Will this start a candidate sign war in West Roxbury?

Taking a ride down West Roxbury's Centre Street on Wednesday, you wouldn't find political candidate signs in businesses' windows - except for one location - Blanchard's Wine & Spirits.

Several Patch readers pointed out the large Mike Ross for Mayor signs at the intersection of Centre and LaGrange streets in West Roxbury - one of the most visible areas in the neighborhood.

Aside from Blanchard's, political candidate signs were only seen at candidate offices for Marty Walsh, Dan Conley, and Martin Keogh.

For some longtime residents, seeing a political sign at Blanchard's was something new.

"They definitely caught my attention right away because I've never seen political signs at that location in 40 years," said Joe Donahue. "In fact, I can't think of many businesses in West Roxbury that have displayed signs for candidates in hotly contested races, probably because they are afraid of alienating customers.  I don't know if that would happen here because Blanchard's has been a solid member of our community for decades and their recent remodeling project helps make Centre Street more attractive."
