O’Malley Renamed Chair of Gov’t Ops Committee

West Roxbury’s city council representative will serve another year as chair of an influential government committee.

Boston District 6 City Councilor Matt O’Malley was renamed chair of the Government Operations Committee Thursday, according to a statement from O’Malley’s office.

The committee focuses on issues related to the structure and mechanics of city government and its departments, agencies and commissions, according to a statement. All proposed ordinances and special laws are referred to this committee, which also aims to reduce overlap in city functions and programs.  The committee also has oversight of the activities of the mayor’s office and numerous committees and boards.

During his first year as chair, O’Malley, who represents Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury and sections of Roslindale and Mission Hill, convened hearings on initiatives ranging from creating a rental housing registry and developing rules to protecting student athletes from head injuries, according to the statement.

Through the committee, he held hearing on strengthening the city’s noise ordinance and imposing restrictions on satellite dishes as well.

“I am honored to be renamed Chair of the City Council’s Committee on Government Operations and I am grateful for President Murphy’s confidence in me,” said O’Malley in the statement. “Government Operations deals with the nuts and bolts of city government.  I have enjoyed having a leadership role in developing and strengthening our city’s laws and ordinances.  I look forward to another productive year.”

City Council President Stephen J. Murphy also renamed O’Malley vice chair of the Economic Development Committee.
