Grandfathering Is in all Boston Public School Choice Plans

The Boston Public Schools said that a "grandfathering" claus is included in all school choice plans, so students will be able to remain in their current schools once a new system begins.

Boston Public School officials said that students will be able to remain in their present school even after a new student assignment plan begins.

School officials sent out a press release specifically about the issue.

'Can my child stay in his or her school if we adopt a new assignment plan?' We are doing our best to answer your great questions about our Improving School Choice proposals. One of the most common questions we have received so far comes from parents of current students, who are asking whether their child can stay in his or her current school under whatever plan we create.
The answer is yes.

  • A child entering Kindergarten next year would be able to stay in his or her school until the next transition grade - even if that school eventually sits outside a family's new assignment zone.
  • BPS would also continue to provide bus transportation for these students until at least the year 2019.
  • Beginning for the 2014-2015 school year, sibling preference would be available for schools in a child's home zone.

School officials said that with zone-based proposals, walk zone preference would continue to apply just as it does today.
