Animal Rescue League Offering Emergency Backpacks for Pet Owners on Saturday

The backpacks are available with a $40 donation at the ARL's shelters in Dedham, Boston and Brewster.

Pet owners who donate $40 to any of the Animal Rescue League of Boston's shelters in Dedham, Boston or Brewster this weekend will receive a pet emergency backpack, the ARL announced.

In honor of National Animal Disaster Awareness Day on Saturday, May 10, the ARL will issue the backpacks that come stocked with survival items, including extended shelf-life water and food for dogs and cats.

The backpacks are given in an effort by the ARL to encourage Massachusetts pet owners to plan ahead for any sudden evacuation due to an emergency situation, such as a flood, tornado or wildfire.

"If you have a pet, part of your emergency planning should include how you will shelter and care for your animal," Brian O'Connor, Manager of Rescue Services at the ARL, said in a statement. "Getting a pet emergency bag ready to go in case you need to evacuate due to flooding or loss of electricity during a storm or other disaster is a very important part of disaster preparedness."

Moreover, the Federal Emergency Management Agency recommends getting a sturdy and comfy crate or carrier to transport pets, as well as find shelter alternatives that work for families and pets. Pet owners are also encouraged to have a picture of themselves with their pets in case of separation during emergency.

"Having a recent picture of you and your pet not only helps others assist you in finding your pet, but it also documents ownership," O'Connor said.

Pet owners can share a photo of themselves with their pet on Instagram (follow us @arlboston) using hashtag #arlluvpets to enter to win a pet emergency backpack through Saturday, May 10. Winners will be announced on Monday, May 12 on the ARL's Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter pages.
