Things To Do This Weekend In and Around West Roxbury

So, looking for something to do this weekend?

Friday

Slice the ice: It's public ice skating time on Fridays from noon to 2 p.m. and 8-10 p.m., and Saturdays from 2:40-4:40 p.m. and Sundays from 2-4 p.m. at the Jim Roche Community Ice Arena in West Roxbury. The Jim Roche Community Skating Arena Facebook page is here, and you can find daily updates on its schedule.

A kapowie punch of music: Miss Fairchild, Gold Blood and Associates and Randall Flagg share the bill on Friday night at the Milky Way Lounge in Jamaica Plain, making it a night of R&B you won't want to miss (well, if you're an R&B fan). Some words from its website about the headliners: "Boston’s Original R&B ensemble Miss Fairchild is joyfully committed to the show; spectacle, musicianship, awe and entertainment. Channeling both the urban ferocity of The Dap Kings as well as the slick live acts of Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars, they tilt their fedora’s to the past, while dancing in tandem with the contemporary."

The tech goes home: The West Roxbury branch of the Boston Public Library, at 1961 Centre St., hosts this workshop for new computer users who either have limited instruction or don't have a computer at home. All classes are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and continue through February. Click here for more info.

Oooh, that is getting really moldy: Stonybrook Fine Arts in JP starts a 10-week mold making class tonight. Use clay, wax and plastic and learn the basics of mold-making, and hopefully leave with something you can proudly display.

Saturday

Fitness guru at the library: The Friends of the JP Branch Library present the first JP Writes & Invites event for the year. Margaret Richard has been in the fitness business for more than thirty years. Her TV show “Body Electric” has been a staple on PBS for 22 years and has a best-selling accompanying book. Get all the info.

Make-up dance: That's make-up for the dance that was canceled in December, silly. The Knights and Ladies of St. Finbarr hosts a dance with tunes provided by the Denis Curtin band.  This is a benefit dance, held in Arlington, to help with missionary work in Africa.

Sunday

Sustaining and swapping: The Sustainable Fashion Collaborative hosts a Sustainability in Action post holiday clothing swap at Bella Luna Restaurant, 284 Armory St., in JP. Here's how it works: you bring 5-10 gently worn pieces of clothing that you "once loved" (or maybe even still love but don't wear) and bring it to the event. Others do, too. While enjoying pizza and drinks, you get one token for each article of clothing to shop for clothes others are parting with at this event. Everyone wins. It's from 6-8 p.m. and tickets are $15.

Make a splash together: On Sundays, from 5-6 p.m., the YMCA in West Roxbury opens its pool to children with autism and their families to swim together. It's free for members, and a "day rate" for nonmembers.
