Friday marks the 9th anniversary of the law that allowed gay and lesbian couples to marry in Massachusetts.
Dozens of local gay and lesbian couples gathered at the Boston Public Garden Thursday to celebrate the 9th anniversary of the law that gave them the right to marry in Massachusetts. The celebration, put on in partnership between Gay & Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD), the Respect for Marriage Coalition and Mayor Thomas Menino, ended with a group photo at a location popular for wedding photography. "It's been an extraordinary five years," said Ellen Wade of Newton, who along with her wife, Maureen Brodoff, were one of the plaintiffs in the landmark case they won in 2003 that led to the adoption of marriage equality in the state. "It's been exciting and inspiring, and we're grateful to have played a small part in showing the country …

Models strutted down Spring Street styling and profiling in Top It Off and Fabutique jewelry, clothing and accessories.
From a trainwreck in 2010, to a red carpet fashion show with sexy models strutting Spring Street in the newest spring and summer fashions. In a nutsheel, that's the three-year turnaround of Fairview Corner in West Roxbury. Back in 2010, Kalembar Dune owner Shirley Walsh bought the block of stores she has since named Fairview Corner. Kalembar Dune had been in business on the block since 2005. "In 2010 there was just the barber shop, and a real estate office. It was a trainwreck before," said Walsh, before the second Fairview Corner Fashion Show on Thursday night. The first one took place in November last year. She added, "I'm so excited. It's like when your kids come home with straight A's on their report card." Since Walsh's acquisition…

Brand new books from a list created by Lyndon School students were donated through the BC Reads program.
Through a Boston College program, the Patrick Lyndon School Library received hundreds of new books requested by students. On May 3, Boston College students, part of the fundraising program BC Reads, donated five boxes of books. A large amount of additional funding was generously provided by the Boston College Bookstore. "During our celebration, Lyndon students from several grades read poems about books. One of our administrators, Ms. Tunney spoke and as the grand finale, BC was given a beautiful 'Thank You banner created by sixth-grade student Kevin Kiami," wrote Amy Sallen to Patch, Visual Arts Teacher and Library Team Supervisor for the Lyndon School. "We want to thank Christie Wentworth (who worked directly with the Lyndon to make …

The Boston Athletic Association has invited more than 5,000 runners to take to the course again next year.
It's been just more than one month since the Boston Marathon Bombing and today the Boston Athletic Association announced that runners who were unable to finish will be invited back to the start line. "The opportunity to run down Boylston Street and to cross the finish line amid thousands of spectators is a significant part of the entire Boston Marathon experience," Tom Grilk, B.A.A. Executive Director, said. According to the B.A.A. there are 5,633 runners that started the race and made it past halfway who have been invited back for the race next year on April 21. Claims are being accepted through June 15, and funds will start being distributed on a rolling basis on June 30.
Boston Marathon bombing victims being treated as outpatients at Boston-area hospitals are eligible to receive One Fund Boston payments. Claims are now being accepted through June 15, and money will start being handed out on June 30 on a rolling basis, according to One Fund Boston's website. The final protocol and prioritization for victims was also released through the website. Individual death claims, double amputees and those who suffered permanent brain damage are the top priority. Previously, One Fund Boston administrator Kenneth Feinberg had estimated the families of the three victims who died from the bombings could receive $1 million. "Money is a pretty poor substitute," Feinberg said at one of the Town Hall meetings held to …
Copley Square makeshift memorial continues to grow as one-month anniversary of Boston Marathon bombings passes.
Crowds continued to gather at the makeshift memorial in Copley Square commemorating those impacted by the Boston Marathon bombings Wednesday, which marked one month since the attacks shook the city. There was no special occasion, no moment silence as 2:50 p.m. came and went, which was the time on April 15 when two bombs exploded near the finish line, killing three and injurying 260 others. Instead, those at the memorial shared their own moments of quiet reflection as the memorial continues to grow. Ed Starbuck of Hyannis has been coming to the area nearly every day since shortly after the bombings. What started as a few flags he put down grew into the memorial which has been moved four times, most recently to its current locale. "I would…
Here's the story of Marlene Konkoly, who found creative ways to spend less and save more so she can retire at 50. This story is the first in our series about Extreme Savers.
Americans may be living longer, but our retirement plans aren’t keeping up. Which means people are living longer with smaller bank accounts. But Marlene Konkoly will retire at age 50. How did she do it? She contributes a whopping 45 percent of the gross annual income she earns as a procurement officer for an automotive finance company to her retirement—all while owning a home and remaining debt-free. Konkoly is actually well ahead of the retirement savings curve compared to many of her fellow Americans. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, fewer than half of Americans even know how much money they would need to retire. And nearly a third of employees who had access to a defined contribution plan such as a 401(k) did not participate …
In total, 24 people signed up for mayoral nomination papers, and 27 people signed up for nomination papers for at-large city council.
The deadline to sign up for nomination papers for Boston's mayoral and city council elections has passed, with 24 possible candidates for mayor. To put that in perspective, there were five total candidates in 2009's preliminary election for Boston mayor. The deadline to sign up for papers was Monday at 5 p.m., and there were no big surprises at the deadline—like Mayor Thomas Menino deciding to seek reelection. "The 24 candidates who signed up by Monday’s deadline must now gather 3,000 signatures by May 21 in order to appear on the Sept. 24 election ballot," city spokesperson Emilee Ellison said. Some possible candidates have already started to announce they're not running for office, such as Frank John Addivinola Jr. and Gene Gorman. …
