Should the State Ban School Bake Sales?

State health officials want to put restrictions on school bake sales to discourage unhealthy eating habits, but will this hurt fundraising efforts?

Massachusetts state health officials recently recently approved regulations that would prevent bake sales from being held during school and in the 30 minutes before and after school to discourage unhealthy eating habits. Gov. Deval Patrick has backed down on the regulations after criticism from parents and organizations that say putting restrictions on bake sales would negatively impact fundraising efforts for the schools and nonprofit groups, according to USA Today. Legislation passed in 2010 will still require schools serve healthy snack options in the cafeterias and limit sugary foods. Do you think Gov. Deval Patrick should enforce the bake sale ban to help encourage Massachusetts youth to have healthier eating habits, or should the …

There are a lot more freedoms being taken away than anything to do with food - just count that states that are trying to ban (or already have banned) contraceptives and Planned Parenthood's much-needed women's health care - nothing to do with abortion, by the way - all because of the GOP and the hate of Obama. Sad.   more ›

CM Lacrosse Wins School's First-Ever Catholic Conference Championship

This is the first Catholic Conference championship for Catholic Memorial.

Editor's note: The following was provided by Catholic Memorial. Catholic Memorial School's varsity lacrosse team made history on Tuesday night, capturing the program's first Catholic Conference championship with a 9-8 win over BC High.  For Coach Kevin Lynch and the 11-3 Knights, four regular season games remain before a postseason where they hope to make even more history. Going into the May 8 matchup, the team heard that St. John's Prep had lost to Xaverian earlier in the day, meaning the conference crown was theirs for the taking. "Hearing that news definitely helped motivate them," said Coach Lynch, "and they executed." Despite the win, Lynch was equanimous. "I congratulated them. They did make history. But we need to make sure this …

Ross: Some Boston Streets Shouldn't Have First-Floor Banks

City Councilor Mike Ross said Charles Street on Beacon Hill is an example of a business district where retail is being strangled by too many street-level banks.

Clusters of banks can strangle the retail vitality of certain Boston streets, warned Boston District 8 City Councilor Mike Ross. Ross said Charles Street on Beacon Hill is an example where too many "big box banks" are buying up storefronts at inflated prices mom and pop shops can't afford. The resulting row of banks deadens what could be lively retail zones. "It’s not right for every street to make this 'No Bank First Floor' zoning change, but I believe it’s right for Charles Street on Beacon Hill," said Ross, who represents District 8. Ross said that banks close at 5 p.m. and aren't open on weekends, all of which has a deadening effect for the neighborhood businesses. He made his remarks at Wednesday's City Council meeting. The matter …

Editor's note: The following is a press release. Earning 41% growth in one quarter in a nationwide stock-challenge game, Catholic Memorial seniors Chang Quan of Roslindale and Hao Tang of Dedham were named first in more than 1,000 teams in Massachusetts in the annual SIMFA Foundation's Stock Market Game on April 30. The two accounting students in Mr. Bernard Sullivan's senior course invested an imaginary $100,000, as thousands of their peers did across the nation. By April 30, their portfolio had earned $41,000. More remarkably, CM also fielded the 3rd place team in the state: Ruairi Page of Jamaica Plain and Sean Cushing of Roslindale. How did Tang and Quan beat over 1,000 teams from across Massachusetts? Mostly by riding the wave of …
