Summer Draper Pool Renovations Part of Mayor's $1.8 Billion Capital Plan

The five-year plan includes funding for a new accessible playground near Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and other projects across the city.

The mayor last week announced a plan to invest $1.8 billion over the next five years in capital projects across the city, including a $6.5-million overhaul of playing fields at the West Roxbury Education Complex. Other capital projects in the Parkway slated to happen include the reopening of Flaherty Pool in Roslindale this summer, with a $5.6-million renovation, and construction on the Draper Pool in West Roxbury will begin this summer with a $3.75 million project going forward. At a press conference held May 17 outside the recently opened Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Mayor Thomas Menino discussed some of the 341 projects included in the city’s five-year capital plan for fiscal years 2014-2018—projects that will improve and …

Fallen Service Members Honored on Boston Common

Dignitaries speak at Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund flag display.

With more than 33,000 small American flags planted in the ground on Boston Common, dozens gathered nearby Thursday to pay tribute to the men and women who gave their lives in service to their country. Each flag represented a U.S. serviceman or woman from Massachusetts who has died in uniform since the American Civil War, and each flag was planted by volunteers with the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund. "This display stops people directly in their tracks," said Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund President Steve Kerrigan. "And that, of course, is exactly the point." "We shall never forget the sacrifices made by those who gave us our freedom today," said Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. The names of 187 military members who died in service …

Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011.  In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven…

Which West Roxbury Residents are Running for Office?

Two of the biggest heavyweights in the mayor's race reside in West Roxbury - John Connoly and Dan Conley.

Numerous West Roxbury residents have submitted nomination papers for Boston's mayoral and city council races. Of the 17 candidates who submitted mayoral nomination papers, two West Roxbury residents are clearly first and second in having the most cash for their campaigns.
