West Roxbury Rocks! Fundraiser on Friday Night

Enjoy music by Tradition, an Irish step dance performance, a silent auction and more at the Irish Social Club of Boston in West Roxbury.

  On Friday night, Ethos will hold its 3rd annual West Roxbury Rocks! event to benefit AgeWell West Roxbury. "West Roxbury Rocks is a great opportunity to have fun with friends and neighbors AND support services for the elderly!" said Dale Mitchell, executive director of Ethos. Coppinger: No Funding for AgeWell West Roxbury in Governor's Proposed Budget

The AgeWell West Roxbury program helps senior citizens stay in their homes longer to age where they know.

  Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick proposed a $34.8 billion budget on Wednesday, which included no funding for the valued AgeWell West Roxbury program. But it's a proposed budget, which state Rep. Ed Coppinger, D-West Roxbury, addressed. "The Governor’s budget is just the first step in a long process so not everything he proposed will end up in the budget that we pass in the House of Representatives or what the (state) Senate passes either. I am looking forward to debating it and helping the House draft our budget in response," said Coppinger, who also represents parts of Brookline and Roslindale. Coppinger also spoke about the lack of funding to AgeWell West Roxbury, which received approximately $30,000 in the Fiscal Year 2012 budget…

Ethos' AgeWell West Roxbury program is designed to help senior citizens age while living well in their own homes.

  On Dec. 18, Ethos AgeWell West Roxbury held its annual holiday luncheon at the Elks Hall in West Roxbury. Senior citizens fom all around the Boston area came to meet with friends, listen to holiday music, eat, and celebrate another year for Ethos' aging-in-place initiative -AgeWell West Roxbury. Photos: Volunteers Deliver Groceries to 80 Parkway Families in Need

Due to the high demand for the Families in Need program, donations are being sought to offset additional costs.

  For those of you who may not know about the Family in Need effort, for many years, the West Roxbury Business and Professional Association, in coordination with the West Roxbury YMCA, Ethos /AgeWell West Roxbury, and our Boston Police Department, identify a list of families and seniors who need holiday groceries at Thanksgiving and Christmas. We then work with Roche Bros. who offers us consideration on the cost and then bags up the groceries and turkeys for us for distribution.  A group of volunteers from the business, non-profit and residential communities then make the deliveries. We also identify one or two families with greater needs and “adopt” them, offering them assistance as well as presents from the business and residential …

Congressman Lynch Talks Senior Citizen Issues

Congressman Steve Lynch, state Sen. Mike Rush, and state Rep. Ed Coppinger, spoke at the Deutsches Altenheim home on Friday afternoon.

  Congressman Stephen Lynch joined West Roxbury residents state Sen. Mike Rush, and state Rep. Ed Coppinger, to speak about issues impacting senior citizens on Friday. Deutsches Altenheim hosted “Stand up for Seniors”, co-sponsored with AgeWell West Roxbury, and the West Roxbury Business and Professional Association. Lynch, D-9th, provided "a Washington update", discussing several issues that impact seniors. Lynch explained the logistics behind the Social Security COLA increases and the prospects for an increase in 2013. He also discussed Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan's, R-1st, budget plan which would fundamentally change Medicare, essentially turning it into a voucher system, said Lynch. VIDEO: Seniors Flash Mob Roche Bros for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Friday was World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and Ethos used a unique way to highlight the day.

  June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and to mark the occasion, a group of senior citizens performed a flash mob dance at Roche Brosto draw attention to the physical, emotional or sexual abuse, financial exploitation, neglect, abandonment or self-neglect that many seniors secretly face." Around 10 a.m. on Friday, Ethos staff, volunteers and seniors stopped what they were doing at the supermarket to bring awareness to elder abuse. Daily in Massachusetts, there are 54 reports of suspected elder abuse (20,000 per year), according figures reported in 2011 by Mass Home Care, an elder services advocacy group. In Boston alone, there were more than 7,000 cases of suspected elder abuse reported from 2008 to 2012, according to Ethos, who is …

Restored Funding to Help Ethos and AgeWell West Roxbury

Massachusetts House of Representatives restores funding for naturally occurring retirement communities.

  Editor's note: The following is a press release. Ethos, the elder services non-profit that operates AgeWell West Roxbury, said today that the Massachusetts House of Representatives voted to restore funding for Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCS), which was cut by 50 percent under the budget Governor Deval Patrick submitted to the legislature. NORCs are high-impact, low-cost “aging-in-place” models that allow elders to continue living independently in their homes, reducing the utilization of costly nursing home care. Nursing homes cost for each senior costs Massachusetts taxpayers $46,500 per year, whereas home care costs taxpayers only $18,000 per year, yielding almost $30,000 per year in savings for every elder who ages …

West Roxbury Rocks 2012 went down at the Irish Social Club of Boston and raised funds for AgeWell West Roxbury.

  AgeWell West Roxbury celebrated its 5th anniversary on March 24 with the fundraising event West Roxbury Rocks. Check out this video of the event held at the Irish Social Club of Boston, which featured food, music and dancing.  The proceeds raised went to the AgeWell West Roxbury program, a part of the non-profit Ethos organization. AgeWell West Roxbury is a program to help people age in place, and features educational workshops, exercise and balance programs, social events, all offered free or at minimal cost to senior citizens.
