The AgeWell West Roxbury program helps senior citizens stay in their homes longer to age where they know.
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick proposed a $34.8 billion budget on Wednesday, which included no funding for the valued AgeWell West Roxbury program. But it's a proposed budget, which state Rep. Ed Coppinger, D-West Roxbury, addressed. "The Governor’s budget is just the first step in a long process so not everything he proposed will end up in the budget that we pass in the House of Representatives or what the (state) Senate passes either. I am looking forward to debating it and helping the House draft our budget in response," said Coppinger, who also represents parts of Brookline and Roslindale. Coppinger also spoke about the lack of funding to AgeWell West Roxbury, which received approximately $30,000 in the Fiscal Year 2012 budget…

Due to the high demand for the Families in Need program, donations are being sought to offset additional costs.
For those of you who may not know about the Family in Need effort, for many years, the West Roxbury Business and Professional Association, in coordination with the West Roxbury YMCA, Ethos /AgeWell West Roxbury, and our Boston Police Department, identify a list of families and seniors who need holiday groceries at Thanksgiving and Christmas. We then work with Roche Bros. who offers us consideration on the cost and then bags up the groceries and turkeys for us for distribution. A group of volunteers from the business, non-profit and residential communities then make the deliveries. We also identify one or two families with greater needs and “adopt” them, offering them assistance as well as presents from the business and residential …

Editor's note: The following is a press release. Ethos, the elder services non-profit that operates AgeWell West Roxbury, said today that the Massachusetts House of Representatives voted to restore funding for Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCS), which was cut by 50 percent under the budget Governor Deval Patrick submitted to the legislature. NORCs are high-impact, low-cost “aging-in-place” models that allow elders to continue living independently in their homes, reducing the utilization of costly nursing home care. Nursing homes cost for each senior costs Massachusetts taxpayers $46,500 per year, whereas home care costs taxpayers only $18,000 per year, yielding almost $30,000 per year in savings for every elder who ages …
