Knights end their season 7-2 as four captains played their final games.
Catholic Memorial's much-hyped 2011 football season came to a sombering conclusion Thanksgiving morning as BC High shut down the high-powered Knights offense, claiming the Catholic Conference championship with a 13-0 win. Though scoring was at a premium in the 50th annual rivalry game, the Eagles (8-3, 4-0) controlled the game offensively, running 53 plays to CM's 30. That disparity in possession led to CM head coach Alex Campea's daring but controversial fourth quarter decision to attempt to convert on fourth-and-two on the Knights' own 22-yard line while trailing 6-0. Senior quarterback AJ Doyle's keeper was stuffed like a turkey by a strong BC High defensive line, giving the Eagles possession well within striking distance. Seven plays …

The 50th anniversary of the rivalry will also see the stadium's dedication to former coach Jim O'Connor.
What better way for the Catholic Memorial School to honor two-time Eastern Massachusetts Super Bowl winning coach Jim O'Connor than to dedicate the football team's stadium to him during a halftime ceremony on Thanksgiving, in the 50th annual rivalry game against BC High? Perhaps by earning their first trip to the playoffs since that third Super Bowl in 1978 on the very same day. Thanksgiving has loomed on the Knights' schedule all season. The two teams always seemed to be on a collision path, gelling as units in the first half of the season and running through Catholic Conference opponents in the second. Now, the teams will play for the Conference championship. By announcing the dedication, CM (7-1, 3-0) upped the day's stakes even more. …

Knights contest against Trumbull called off after lights malfunctioned in the second quarter.
For nearly 16 minutes of football on Friday night, the Catholic Memorial football team must have thought to themselves, This is more like it. With 6:25 remaining in the second quarter, the Knights – just one week removed from a humbling 24-0 loss to Marshfield in their season opener – held a commanding 14-0 lead against Connecticut powerhouse Trumbull High School. CM quarterback AJ Doyle and the Knights’ offense controlled the pace of the game, and the Knights’ defense was coming up with big play after big play. Then the lights went out. Literally. “It’s just crazy,” said CM head coach Alex Campea. “I’ve been coaching football for over 30 years and I’ve never been in a game where the lights just went out.” That’s just what happened, though…

It's a do-or-die contest against defending Super Bowl champs for the Knights on Senior Night Friday.
Xaverian Hawks (7-2) at Catholic Memorial Knights (5-3) Friday, Nov. 12 – 7:00 p.m. What's at stake: Everything, for Catholic Memorial. It's a do-or-die matchup. The Knights stand at 1-1 in the Catholic Conference and would be eliminated from postseason contention with a loss. Standing in their way are the Hawks, the defending Division I State Champs, who have won 20 of their last 22 games, are 2-0 in the conference, edged the Knights by two scores last season (30-28), and have retained much of the talent from their Super Bowl squad. If that pressure's not enough, Friday will be Senior Night at Catholic Memorial, meaning emotions will be high as the Knights' seniors take to the field on Baker Street for the last time. For Xaverian, a loss …

Knights give Boxers a good fight but surrender game-winning touchdown with seven seconds remaining in 19-18 loss.
The Catholic Memorial Knights fell just seven seconds short of pulling off a major upset against the state's No. 2 team on Friday night, ultimately losing to Brockton 19-18 at home. Brockton junior wide receiver Lucas Depina hauled in a 41-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Paul Mroz on fourth-and-nine for the Boxers' (8-1) game-winning score. After taking over with 52 seconds left in the game and trailing 18-13, Mroz led a six-play drive that culminated in the touchdown. Depina beat Knights' junior defensive back Armani Reeves to the front corner of the end zone and took to the air to haul in the deep pass. "They made one more play than we did," Knights coach Alex Campea said. "Fourth down play, they had to throw it to the end …

Catholic Memorial's furious finish not enough; Eagles win 42-29.
The Catholic Memorial Knights fell to the St. John's Prep Eagles Saturday afternoon in Danvers in a game that saw each side score 13 points in the final minute and thirty seconds. Leading 29-16 with 3:50 seconds left, the Eagles took over possession. Given the success the team had running the ball to that point in the game, it seemed as though St. John's may have been able to end the game there. But less than a minute later, John Gorman recovered an Eagles fumble at the St. John's 33-yard line, violently tearing off the game's floodgates. "It was a typical Catholic Conference game," CM Head Coach Alex Campea said afterwards. "Fight all the way to the end, battle all the way to the end, to the last play of the game." Knights quarterback AJ …

The Knights will look to build upon last week's Catholic Conference victory.
Catholic Memorial Knights (5-1, 1-0) at St. John's Prep Eagles (4-3, 0-0) Saturday October 30 - 1:00 p.m. What's at stake: The Knights last week kicked off their league schedule with a victory against Malden Catholic, thereby immediately guaranteeing themselves a better Catholic Conference record than they posted in 2009 when they went 0-4. The Knights see one last non-league competitor next week when they take on Brockton before they host defending Division I State Champion Xavarian in a game that shines on the schedule as what could, if things went well for CM, be the team's biggest game in years. To take the momentum begotten by a 2-0 league schedule into the next two weeks - particularly the Xavarian match-up - would be huge for the …

Earl's 2 TDs, Williams' return to lineup key Knights's 27-24 victory over Malden Catholic.
Catholic Memorial got off on the right foot in Catholic Conference play, defeating Malden Catholic 27-24 Friday night at Brother Gilbert Stadium in Malden. Will Earl's 14-yard touchdown run with just under eight minutes remaining in the game gave the Knights (5-1, 1-0 in the league) the winning score. Three plays after CM senior defensive lineman Joe Isaksen came up with a fumble recovery on the Lancers' 19-yard-line, Earl burst up the middle nearly untouched to paydirt. The touchdown was Earl's second in the half, in which the Knights outscored Malden Catholic (4-3, 0-2) 20-8. This was a far cry from the game's first frame, which ended with the Lancers ahead 16-7 after completely controlling the flow and pace of the game. In the first …
