Tours of the lilacs and other collections, live music, family activities, food vendors, and picnicking (only allowed on Lilac Sunday).

One of the best ways to celebrate Mother's Day is at the annual Lilac Sunday at the Arnold Arboretum.   The Beauty of Moscow, President Lincoln, and Miss Ellen Willmot -- are just a few of the lilac plants that will be on display at the Arnold Arboretum during this weekend's annual Lilac Sunday. There are more than 380 lilac plants of 176 different kinds in the Arnold Arboretum’s collection, according to Arnold Arboretum's website. That includes 136 cultivars that were selected for certain horticultural features, such as flower size and color. Many of the other lilacs are parents of today's hybrids, and the lilacs will bloom in varied colors and scents during a five- to six-week period each spring. Friendly Dog Removed After Being Left in Car at Arnold Arboretum

Boston Police and arboretum personnel could not find the owner of the dog left in a vehicle parked illegally in a permit only parking lot.

A Boston Animal Control officer took control of a white mastiff/American bulldog mix dog that was left in a car parked illegally at the Arnold Arboretum. On April 19, around 10:09 a.m., Boston Police met with the director of operations for the arboretum about a vehicle parked in an authorized access only parking lot, which the vehicle was not permitted to be in. The vehicle was filled with assorted clothing items as it was being lived out of, according to a Boston Police report. All four windows were rolled down, which is when the police discovered the dog inside the vehicle. The vehicle was registered out of Attleboro, but had no affiliation with the property, said arboretum staff.  Officers patrolled the area in search of the owner of …

PHOTO: Young Coyote in the Arnold Arboretum

A runner captured this photo of what is, according to a park ranger, a juvenile coyote in need of learning to be afraid of people.

There's a young coyote living in the Arnold Arboretum. The park ranger encourages residents who encounter the coyote to run at him, to help the animal learn to be afraid of people. That training will come in handy when the coyote is older and could eventually cause problems with people and children. That's according to John, a friend of JP Patch who didn't want his last name used. John was running in the Arboretum late Friday afternoon when he saw this coyote, took the attached photo and discussed the encounter with a park ranger. John took the ranger's advice and did run at the little coyote, scaring him off. Coyotes are a protected species in Massachusetts except during a five-month hunting and one-month trapping period each year, …

Ever experience a tree mob? Tonight you can at the Arnold Arboretum. At 6 p.m. a tree mob will meet on Peters Hill by the crabapples (please see attached map).  "Tree Mobs are brief interactions with scientists or other specialists at the Arnold Arboretum, and provide another pathway to connect with the landscape," according to the Arnold Arboretum's website.
