Help Boston Shines Today in West Roxbury

Volunteer, say hello, say thank you, to at least two Boston Shines groups cleaning up West Roxbury today.

  This weekend is Boston Shines, with two big spring clean-ups happening in West Roxbury - and you can still help today! There will be a clean-up of the Centre Street business district today (Sat. April 27). Be at the corner of Hastings and Centre streets at 8:30 a.m. sharp to determine how you can help. Light refreshments will be available. Please wear proper attire. This cleanup is going until 2:30 p.m., but volunteering for a shorter time is possible.  Also the annual Bellevue Hill Improvement Association Spring Clean-up is on Saturday. Volunteer to clean up trash, light debris only (no heavy lifting) within the Bellevue Hill section of Stony Brook Reservation. T-shirts, work gloves, and trash bags will be provided. Block Party with All-Female Queen Tribute Band in West Roxbury on Saturday

The Bellevue Hill Improvement Association is hosting its first membership drive and neighborhood party on Saturday.

  This isn't your father or mother's Bellevue Hill Improvement Assocation block party. On Saturday, the 1st Annual BHIA Membership Drive and Neighborhood Party is going to be headlined by a live performance by the only all-female Queen tribute band - Gunpowder Gelatine! It's also a potluck! Starting at 1 p.m. until 5 p.m., Robin Street from Bellevue Street to Wren Street will be blocked off to traffic. Neighbors are welcome to come, meet more neighbors, listen to some music, and join the Association with a mere $5 per year. The party is also a potluck, so please bring a dish to share, or beverages you may want for you and your family. Bringing a chair for sitting is another suggestion. State Sen. Rush Talks About Life in Iraq at Bellevue Hill Meeting

The Bellevue Hill Improvement Association met on Monday night, and all members were offered a free petunia plant.

  State Sen. Mike Rush presented a PowerPoint slideshow on his 8-month deployment to Iraq as an intelligence officer in the US Naval Reserves, at Monday's Bellevue Hill Improvement Association spring meeting. "I was part of the last wave of service members to be in Iraq," said Rush, a lifelong West Roxbury resident. Rush said he is one of four current Massachusetts state legislators who have been mobilized for the military.  Rush talked about the cultural clashes the miltary transition teams dealt with while working with their military Iraqi colleagues, "I certainly learned a lot and I hope they did, too." Last Chance... Bellevue Hill Improvement Association Meeting Tonight

Come to tonight's meeting to hear about some of the new West Roxbury restaurants, the Bellevue Hill cleanup and more.

  No, it's not the last Bellevue Hill Improvement Assocation meeting ever. That would be crazy talk! But tonight's BHIA meeting will be very information for all West Roxbury residents. Several elected officials will provided updates on what they're working on; And an update will be provided about some of the new West Roxbury restaurants. The Belleve Hill-area cleanup will also be discussed. Also, flowering plants will be handed out at the meeting, which will take place at 7 p.m at St. George Orthodox Church. West Roxbury Cleanups for 'Boston Shines' This Weekend

Volunteers are welcome at all of the scheduled neighborhood cleanups.

  West Roxbury is really going to shine after this weekend thanks to several scheduled Boston Shines cleanups in the neighborhood. The 10th Annual Boston Shines is happening around Boston neighborhoods this weekend, specifically on Saturday in West Roxbury. Many groups and individuals have already registered to help make West Roxbury shine. The biggest cleanup is of Centre Street, and volunteers are welcome to show up on Saturday to get their hands dirty. "If you do not have a project in mind but would like to participate, please come down to the Hastings Street Municipal Lot," said Christopher Tracy, West Roxbury Coordinator of the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services. Bellevue Hill Improvement Association Cleanup on Saturday

Boston Shines is this weekend, let's make West Roxbury shine!

  As a part of Boston Shines, the Bellevue Hill Improvement Association will be conducting a cleanup of the Stony Brook Park on Bellevue Hill this Saturday. The cleanup will start at 9 a.m. and go until noon. All those interested should plan to meet at the west side of the Bellevue Hill water tower by the steps leading up from Bellevue Hill Road.  Please plan on wearing proper cleanup attire, bring your own gloves and water bottle. Trash bags will be provided. A Walking Tour to Point Out DCR Problems of Bellevue Hill and Water Tower Areas

Bellevue Hill residents expressed great frustration with the Department on Conservation and Recreation in the quality of roads and sidewalks at recent meeting.

Last Wednesday's Bellevue Hill Improvement Assocation's meeting was sparsely attended, but ripe with passion. Daniel Hunt, Director of Governmental Affairs for the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), attended the meeting and heard from numerous residents regarding frustrations that have mounted through the years. Several residents complained about DCR's lack of tending to sidewalks and roads in the Bellevue Hill area, specifically Bellevue Hill Road. Several times Hunt blamed the problems on a lack of funding. Hunt was chastised by Athena Yerganian, vice president of the Bellevue Hill Improvement Association, saying neighbors have heard DCR's excuses about not having funding for years.
