West Roxbury's Top It Off won last year! If you own a business or home in Boston, you could be this year's winner of a citywide holiday decoration contest.
Do you go all out at your home or business to get in the holiday spirit? If you have the best display in Boston in one of several categories, you could be one of this year's winners of the Boston Deck the City contests. And last year's business window winner, Top It Off, hails from West Roxbury! Top It Off is back in the game this year, as is Fabutique, which held a launch party for its holiday display. Check below for all participating West Roxbury businesses. There are two contests, one for businesses and one for residents. New this year to the contest is the "Deck the Rooftops" contest for residents. Matthew Gruber was named West Roxbury Main Streets' Volunteer of the Year; and West on Centre was named Business of the Year.
Some local faces and places took him awards at the Boston Main Streets 16th Annual Awards Ceremony held at the Strand Theatre in Dorchester on May 17. Awards were presented to the 2011 Boston Main Streets Volunteers of the Year and Businesses of the Year. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, Department of Neighborhood Development Director Evelyn Friedman, WPLM Easy 99.1’s “Strictly Sinatra” host Ron Della Chiesa, and the Boston Latin School Wolftones presented awards. Matthew Gruber was named Volunteer of the Year for West Roxbury Main Streets.
Boston Main Streets held its annual awards ceremony on Thursday night at the Strand Theatre in Dorchester. Mayor Thomas Menino congratulated Top It Off co-owner Elizabeth Hoenscheid for winning citywide Deck the Windows contest.
Top It Off co-owner Elizabeth Hoenscheid put a shawl on Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. The Mayor smiled and let it be known that he's not the kind of guy who wears red shawls. Minutes before, Menino awarded first place to Top It Off for winning the Deck the Windows of Boston Main Streets contest. The contest took place in Boston's 18 Main Streets districts, with more than 350 small businesses decorating their windows, with the winner being chosen through an online survey. In a quick ceremony emceed by Janet Wu, Top It Off was crowned the champion of the contest. Hoenscheid received a plaque for the storefront display. She spoke about the window before the ceremony. Michael Loconto, president of West Roxbury Main Streets board and a resident of West Roxbury since 2003 helps utilize his role in the organization to promote a healthy business district.
In June more than 100 people gathered in the House of Blues on Lansdowne street in Boston and raised more than $21,000 for families dealing with childhood cancer. “Put the Cuffs on Cancer” and was hosted by both West Roxbury Main Streets and Cops for Kids With Cancer, both nonprofit organizations with strong ties to the community. Michael Loconto, board president of WRMS, said that part of the reason they chose to partner with Cops for Kids With Cancer, was the amount of officers who actually reside in West Roxbury. “The Boston Police are heavily involved,” he said. “[This event] is a link to our community. Hickman named Volunteer of the Year for WRMS; and Rox Diner chosen as Business of the Year by WRMS.
The Rox Diner and Karen Hickman were honored as the West Roxbury Main Streets' Business and Volunteers of the year at the Boston Main Streets 15th Annual Awards Ceremony last night.
