The alumni–Dennis Curran, Jack Cradock, Thomas Manning and Myles Dudley–were honored at a formal ceremony on November 8 at Boston’s Westin Copley Place Hotel. Named after the school motto “Vince in Bono Malum”– which translates to “Conquer evil by doing good”– the annual awards are bestowed in three categories: Distinguished Professional Achievement, Outstanding Service to Community and Outstanding Young Alumnus. Kevin Donnelly and Emmit Tkach have been honored as Advanced Placement Scholars.
West Roxbury resident Kevin Donnelly and Roslindale resident Emmit Tkach have been awarded special recognition by the College Board’s AP Program as Advanced Placement Scholars. Both students attended the Catholic Memorial School. Donnelly, a freshman at Providence College, is one of several CM students who scored at least an average of 3 (out of a possible 5) points on three or more Advanced Placement exams taken in the Spring of 2012. Tkach, a freshman at Boston College, was named an AP Scholar with Honor. That means he scored at least an average of 3.25 (out of a possible 5) points on three or more exams, according to a CM press release. “This is a great accomplishment for our students and for our faculty, who work so hard with our …

Starting in Dubrovnik, the group walked the ancient walled city on the Adriatic and toured the nearby countryside.
Seventeen Catholic Memorial School students joined theology teacher Chris Boyle on a maiden voyage this June to Bosnia/Herzegovina, where they swam in the Adriatic, served local farmers and witnessed one of the most popular Catholic pilgrimages in Europe. One of five BERSI (Blessed Edmund Rice Solidarity Initiative) trips this year, the Bosnia trip gave students a taste of a lesser-known corner of Europe, said Boyle, and a glimpse into small-town life in the mountains of a former war-torn country. "This was a great group of students who impressed me by being so open to new experiences," said Boyle, whose father Arthur Boyle, a development director for the Archdiocese of Boston, also traveled with the group. Starting in Dubrovnik, the …

10% of the class went on to serve in the ministry.
They came from 26 states and three foreign countries, from as far as California and Germany to as nearby as Dedham. Catholic Memorial School's class of 1962 converged on the school's campus on June 8 for its 50th high school reunion. Remarkably, 62 of them showed up. That included the school's current president, Paul Sheff, who himself was theclass valedictorian a half-century ago. The school's second graduating class sees itself as the one that really put the school on the map - winning the school's first athletic state championship - in basketball - as well as the first state title in speech and debate, along with several league championships. At the reunion, the class celebrated Mass, had a lively discussion as part of an ongoing …

The 4x100-meter relay team earned the school’s first MIAA All-State title in the event.
The undefeated Catholic Memorial 4x100-meter relay team of David Berment, Hanif Conrad, Donovan Henry and Curtis West made history on Tuesday night, earning the school’s first MIAA All-State title in the event on their way to a 5th place team finish. The team ran the relay in 42.69 seconds, besting 2nd-place Lawrence High by fractions of a second at the meet, held at Fitchburg State. It was their personal best of the season – an improvement of .39 seconds over their Division II championship time earned the week before. How did they improve so much in one week? "Their passes improved and were more crisp," said head coach Vin Catano, "and of course, it's a grander stage. It's the ultimate.” This Saturday, the team intends to run at the New…

In “Letters to the Other,” Woodall’s one-hour recital of songs that have inspired him during his journeys.
Catholic Memorial School senior Mark Woodall of West Roxbury has spent more time than most 18-year-olds on a plane, traveling to Eastern Europe, Peru, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic and Mexico in his high school years with the school’s travel immersion program. Clearly, Woodall did not simply go on these trips to see the sights. As demonstrated by his independent study recital in music, art and writing on May 4, in the school’s seminar room, Woodall has digested and, as Yeats would say, become a part of all that he has met. VIDEO: Check out Mark Woodall's performance here. In “Letters to the Other,” Woodall’s one-hour recital of songs that have inspired him during his journeys, Woodall recounted to 100 friends, faculty and family …

Catholic Memorial School seniors Jhovani Vonleh, and West Roxbury's Jack Donovan and Jack Gill, are leading the way to helping Haiti residents.
In some local households, scuffed sneakers often head to the trash. Yet in Haiti, just more than two years after the earthquake, "there are a lot of children that have to wear the same shoes over and over again," a trend leading to "a lot of foot problems" in the Caribbean nation "that we take for granted in the United States," Sharon resident Jhovani Vonleh says. "Gangrene can occur. Also, your feet start to grow incorrectly by bound feet, wearing the same small shoes over and over again. Because some people just don't have the money to go out and get new shoes all the time," he says. "I know it's just a small piece of a larger puzzle, but it's definitely something we want to help cure or fix." Vonleh and fellow Catholic Memorial School…
