Photos: Volunteers Deliver Groceries to 80 Parkway Families in Need

Due to the high demand for the Families in Need program, donations are being sought to offset additional costs.

For those of you who may not know about the Family in Need effort, for many years, the West Roxbury Business and Professional Association, in coordination with the West Roxbury YMCA, Ethos /AgeWell West Roxbury, and our Boston Police Department, identify a list of families and seniors who need holiday groceries at Thanksgiving and Christmas. We then work with Roche Bros. who offers us consideration on the cost and then bags up the groceries and turkeys for us for distribution.  A group of volunteers from the business, non-profit and residential communities then make the deliveries. We also identify one or two families with greater needs and “adopt” them, offering them assistance as well as presents from the business and residential …

Do You Have Time to "Ring the Bell" at Roche Bros this Weekend?

Volunteers are needed for this weekend to ring the Salvation Army bell at Roche Bros. If you've never done it before - it's a really cool experience.

Editor's note: I've rung the Salvation Army Bell several times through the years at Roche Bros and it's a very cool experience. Bring your sister, bring your family, bring your brother. Seeing how generous Parkway residents are during the year is one of the most heartwarming experiences in my life. And bell ringers are needed for this Thanksgiving weekend. Jim Hennigan of Hennigan Insurance coordinates the Parkway Kettle Campaign and Salvation Army bell ringing at Roche Bros. There is need almost every day until Christmas Eve, but volunteers are really needed for this Saturday and Sunday AFTER Thanksgiving. Please call Jim Hennigan directly at 617-947-5265 (c) or email him at Jim@jimhennigan.com.

TELL US: Who Makes a Difference in West Roxbury

Help showcase people who are doing great things in your community with our new feature, Count Us In.

Your neighbor who volunteers at the library, your child’s bus driver, and the Little League coach in your community may not seem to have much in common at first glance. But Patch’s new initiative, Count Us In, aspires to bring together all Good Samaritans by highlighting residents who are exemplary at making your community a more positive place. Partnering with Harvard Pilgrim Health Care (HPHC), Count Us In aims to illustrate HPHC's values. They believe that “amazing things happen when people work together” and that is why we want to share stories about just that. If you know someone who exemplifies being a good neighbor, volunteer or teacher—or someone who has simply helped the community in an inspiring way—please tell us about it in the…

I'll get the ball rolling - you know who makes a difference - Boston Police Captain James Hasson of District E-5. The district is well-organized, listens and responds to the community, knows what's happening in the neighborhoods, and is approachable. I feel Hasson's calm and collected leadership skills filter through the department.   more ›

Want to Join the West Roxbury-Roslindale Rotary Club?

The local Rotary Club is a great resource for local business people to network, stay in touch with the community, and give back at the same time.

Don't let the headline fool you, the West Roxbury-Roslindale Rotary Club isn't in need of members, but it wouldn't hurt to bolster the membership of the local community service based organization. The local entity of Rotary International has a roster of 25 Parkway area business professionals involved in varied industries. Rotary has 1.2 million members dedicated to a "Service Above Self" with more than 34,000 clubs worldwide. Members of the West Roxbury-Roslindale chapter meet every Tuesday at noon at West on Centre - and the Club has their own menu (see attached picture). The group is a boisterious bunch, full of laughter as they discuss their recent Rotarian fundraising efforts, business, and the previous evening's television. At this …
