Crime is down all over the city this year versus the same period in 2011.
Crime has declined across Boston so far in 2012, but nowhere has it declined as much as it has in Charlestown, according to data released by the Boston Police Department this week. Meanwhile in the Parkway, District E-5, serving West Roxbury and Roslindale, has reported fewer crimes, too, compared to the same time last year. Looking at the attached charts, District E-5 is noticeably one of the safer districts throughout Boston. The town’s crime rate has dropped a hearty 20 percent when comparing Jan. 1 though Aug. 19, 2011, to Jan. 1 through Aug. 19, 2012. That’s nearly three-times the 7 percent decline in crime the city has seen for the same period. City-wide, only one district—the downtown A-1 district—saw an increase in crime. …

The Rox Diner would like to be operationally in sync with their successful Rox Diner location in Newton, which is open until 10 p.m. and serves beer and wine.
The owners of West Roxbury’s Rox Diner spoke at the West Roxbury Neighborhood Council (WRNC) Tuesdaynight seeking preliminary feedback on wanting to extend their operating hours and obtain a beer and wine license. Owners John Fortin and Paul Lounderback came with their legal representative Anthony Ross to speak on their behalf at the District E-5 Police Station. Presently, the West Roxbury establishment is open until 3 p.m. and they are in the early stages of applying for an extension of operating hours. If approved, they would close at 9 p.m. “For those not familiar with Rox Diner, there’s going to be no bar,” said Ross.” “This is a restaurant. We’re talking about serving beer and wine strictly with meals.” Fortin's and Louderback's …

YMCA District Vice President Marion Kelly and West Roxbury YMCA Board of Advisors Chairman Jim Hennigan shared updated floor plans for the new YMCA site.
After years of planning, the much anticipated West Roxbury Branch YMCA renovations are closer to breaking ground. YMCA District Vice President Marion Kelly and Board of Advisors Chairman Jim Hennigan shared their updated plans during the West Roxbury Neighborhood Council meeting at the District E-5 Police Station’s Community Room. “We came up with a new design that had more usable space within the existing footprint of the building,” said Kelly on Tuesday night. YMCA’s present 22,000 square foot facility will almost double to 39,000 square feet. Kelly and Hennigan took a moment to walk the council through the detailed floor plans. The purchases of the old post office on Centre Street and the Boston Aid to the Blind building added new …

To the Editor: I’d like to bid farewell to one of E5’s more beloved employees: Sgt. Kenny Jameson - an irreplaceable person. Sgt. Jameson is leaving us at the end of August and will be sorely missed. The “Sarge “has been with the department for 37 years and he has been a tremendous asset to our own community service office here in District 5. His knowledge of the community and his eagerness to assist the needs of our residents has been present throughout his career. His passion is evident in all he does. Sgt, Jameson has run adoption, Halloween, and Christmas parties for the children not only in District 5, but throughout the city. He enjoyed bringing joy to those he served and his dedication will truly be missed. Thank you, Captain …

To the Editor: I’d like to bid farewell to one of E5’s more beloved employees: Kerry (Egan) Ryan an irreplaceable person. Kerry will be leaving us in June after being with us for almost five years and has really made a difference within our community. With all of her refreshing enthusiasm, easy–going manner, intelligence, and overall extreme friendliness she has paved new inroads in to the hearts of those we serve. She has done this through the many programs she either participates in or organizes whether it is “sweatin’ with the seniors”, trips to Castle Island, the citizen police academy, or the other numerous activities that she feels will best serve those in need. Kerry has done such a great job at E5 that she is being recognized …

Dear Residents: As we transition into summer, we would like remind residents that summer events at our local parks and holiday cookouts held at our homes can lead to traffic safety concerns. We encourage our community members to enjoy social gatherings and celebrate in a safe fashion. Please adhere to the rules of the road. Be aware of parking signs that state hour limits or no parking. Be advised that it is illegal to park in front of a fire hydrant, a driveway, or a handicap spot and those who choose to ignore the city’s parking limitations will be ticketed or towed. With limited parking spaces available at large events, it is important to adhere to parking regulations in order to prevent unsafe circumstances in case of an emergency. …

Though Parkway residents were greeted by a dusting of snow and plenty of ice on windshields for the Friday morning commute, the chilly temperatures did not keep the hoards of vampires, sumo wrestlers, puppies, doughnuts and hundreds of other costumed children from attending the 8th Annual Halloween Party at the West Roxbury Police District E-5 Department later in the day. There was plenty to see and do at this much anticipated annual event, which ran from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, October 28, with temperatures dipping into the mid-40s. A police car with lights flashing helped light up the night for those playing in and around the bouncy house and bouncy slide. Children were greeted and entertained by professionals actors who roamed the party …

The suspect was allegedly trying to get a DVD player from a relative's home to sell. The following information was provided by the Boston Police Department and does not indicate a conviction.
District E-5 Police arrested a West Roxbury man on Saturday after he refused to stop acting in an aggressive manner and cursing at cops. Police arrested Josiah K. Stirling, 54 Howitt Road, West Roxbury, and charged him with being a disorderly person, on Aug. 13 around 9:25 a.m. Police were called to 54 Howitt Road for assistance and spoke with a relative of the suspect, who said the suspect had agreed to leave the house by 9 a.m. that day, but could return later. Police reiterated that information to the suspect, who acknowledged he understood, according to a police report. The suspect said he wanted a DVD player so he could sell it for money, of which he had none. The relative told police the DVD player was the suspect's, but that he did …
