Op-Ed: What Does a ‘Payroll Tax Holiday’ Really Mean?

Ethos Executive Director Dale Mitchell offers his opinion on the payroll tax holiday.

Ethos' Executive Director Dale Mitchell wrote this op-ed. Please add your comments to the bottom of this article. Q: What does a ‘payroll tax holiday’ really mean? A: In a recent National Public Radio story, a reporter asked people on the street if they had noticed their payroll tax cut. Most people said “No.” People seemed confused between the payroll tax cut, and an income tax cut. Not everyone knew what the payroll tax was. The purpose of the payroll tax cut - which came to be called a “holiday” — was to stimulate Americans to buy more goods and services. Yet almost no one interviewed said the change in payroll tax had stimulated them to shop more. The tax cut in question is actually the Social Security payroll tax. Workers with wage …

Seniors Facing 'Heat Or Eat' Dilemma

Federal fuel aid has plummeted 28% compared to last year.

As the winter heating season descends, federal fuel aid to low-income households in Massachusetts has plummeted 28% compared to last year.    "Like a falling thermostat,” said Dale Mitchell, Executive Director of Ethos, a southwest Boston agency dedicated to keeping frail elders and the disabled at home for as long as possible.  Last year Massachusetts received $184 million in Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funding from the federal government. This year, the state is slated to receive only $132 million, a drop of $52 million. “Given the gridlock in Washington, Congress won’t be doing much,” said Mitchell. “As a result, many seniors are left with ‘heat or eat’ situation as they head into the New Year.” Home heating oil…

Opinion: This is Why Seniors Rallied To Stop Entitlement Cuts

The executive director of Ethos, an aging services access point, discusses why it's important to fully fund Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Dale Mitchell wrote this article and is the executive director of Ethos, which funds the AgeWest West Roxbury program. More than 3,000 elderly and disabled individuals converged on the Wang Center in Boston on Wednesday, November 9 to stage a mass protest against proposed cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Sponsored by Mass Senior Action, AARP, Mass Home Care and several dozen elderly rights and labor groups, the rally literally sent a “big message” to one of the members of the Congressional “Super Committee” that is tasked with developing specific proposals to cut the federal deficit. Seniors took a large envelope stuffed with postcards from elders to the Boston office of U.S. Senator John Kerry, the only New England lawmaker…

West Roxbury Legislative Delegation Secures Funding for AgeWell West Roxbury

State Supplemental budget passed the House and Senate, and will need to be signed by Governor Patrick.

State Rep. Edward Coppinger and state Sen. Mike Rush’s offices are continually fighting for important programs for senior citizens in West Roxbury. The state’s supplemental budget, passed by the House of Representatives on Wednesday and by the Senate on Thursday, includes $107,000 for programs that serve naturally occurring retirement communities. The budget is now in  conference committee before going to Governor Deval Patrick for his signature. "Naturally occurring retirement communities" include any group of apartments, condominiums, houses, cooperatives, planned communities or public housing units in which the majority of residents have “aged in place” and need support services to continue living in their own homes. The funding would …

What Causes Shingles - and Can it be Prevented?

Executive Director of Ethos Dale Mitchell provides the details about shingles - including that shingles are not contagious. Half of all cases are in people older than 60.

This article was written by Dale Mitchell, executive director of Ethos. Each year, approximately 1 million Americans will develop a painful viral infection known as shingles. Shingles is an infection caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox, but not everyone who had chickenpox will develop shingles. The risk for shingles increases with age. Half of all cases of shingles are in people older than 60-years-old. Anyone with a weakened immune system from illnesses such as cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, HIV, are at higher risk. Once you have chicken pox, the virus can stay quiet in your nerve tissues for years. But for many people, the virus "awakens" and forms blisters on the skin. You may get a few blisters or an extensive rash that can …
