Jim Hennigan has been running the Parkway Kettle Campaign for more than 10 years in the Parkway area.
Many of may recognize Jim Hennigan from ringing the Salvation Army bell outside of Roche Bros in West Roxbury. But did you know that Hennigan has also been the organizer of the Parkway Kettle Campaign for 11 years? The Boston Business Journal featured 10 of Boston area's top Salvation Army bell ringers, including Hennigan. Hennigan owns the Hennigan Insurance Agency (an advertiser on West Roxbury Patch). Hennigan has said he saw Corps Sergeant Major Edward Gooding ring the bell for years outside of the supermarket, and that inspired him to organize community bell-ringing. Ringing the Salvation Army bell outside of Roche Bros is up an uplifting experience that families can together for just an hour of their time.
There are several timeslots open this week for ringing the Salvation Army bell for the Parkway Kettle Campaign outside of Roche Bros in West Roxbury. Ringing the bell is a fun, heartwarming experience to see so many Parkway residents be so giving. Read about one of the time's that I (David Ertischek) have rung the bell - and will probably be ringing the bell this week, too. Time slots are only one hour long and go by very quickly as you see people you know coming and going. You can bring family members, or co-workers, or even pets. Volunteers are needed for this weekend to ring the Salvation Army bell at Roche Bros. If you've never done it before - it's a really cool experience.
Editor's note: I've rung the Salvation Army Bell several times through the years at Roche Bros and it's a very cool experience. Bring your sister, bring your family, bring your brother. Seeing how generous Parkway residents are during the year is one of the most heartwarming experiences in my life. And bell ringers are needed for this Thanksgiving weekend. There is need almost every day until Christmas Eve, but volunteers are really needed for this Saturday and Sunday AFTER Thanksgiving. St. T's annual Christmas Bazaar is on Saturday, and items can be donated at that time, too. The St. Theresa School will combine its collection with Wicked Sharp's to be brought to Hurricane Sandy victims in New Jersey.
The St. Theresa's School community is collecting items to send to Hurricane Sandy victims in New Jersey. This Saturday is St. T's annual Christmas Bazaar, and they will also collecting items for Hurricane Sandy victims in Garfield, NJ, said Carol Dolan of the St. Theresa School PTA. "This week we will be collecting items to send to the victims of Hurricane Sandy. The donations will be sent directly to the Boys and Girls Club of Garfield, NJ and distributed throughout their community," said Dolan. Jim Hennigan has led the Parkway Kettle Campaign, as it's raised more than $250,000 for local communities through the Salvation Army.
Ten years ago Jim Hennigan started the Parkway Kettle Campaign, filling a West Roxbury void for the Salvation Army. Since then the local campaign has raised more than $250,000. "I look back on it now, and I never anticipated it to be an ongoing thing," said Hennigan. "In 2002, there was a news story that there was a need they weren’t getting volunteers for the Salvation Army." The neighborhood was plentiful with people who were very community-focused, said Hennigan, so he called up everyone he knew, and a bell-ringing campaign started at the old Roche Bros (where CVS is on Centre Street now). To the Editor: It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas... Well maybe not weather-wise but certainly at the entrance to Roche Bros. thanks to The Salvation Army - Parkway Kettle Campaign, a large boom box, and a crew of cheerful bell ringers under the coordination of Jim Hennigan. As one of those bell ringers I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude to my neighbors, friends, and complete strangers from West Roxbury and the surrounding area who selflessly give to the Salvation Army campaign.
